what the difference is between a feed balancer (Topspec) and Naff Pink powder (it says its a feed balencer on the tub and can be fed at maintenace).

Also what is the difference between a feed balancer and just a supplement of vits and mis?

Stupid question, but help would be apreciated.

Thanks!

hmm, ill have a bash. Naf Pink powder, i was led to believe is a pre-(or pro???)-biotic so similar to actimel for us, so enhances digestive tract and ability to take up nutrients from the feed. Feed Balancers provide the correct amout of vitamins/minerals required by a horsey so more like a complete feed... Supplements of vits and mins depends on the type but could be just one, two or several vits and/or mins... not necessarily the complete requirements. But useful if you want to give extra (eg Magnesium) of one type to produce a desired effect.

Hope that helps. I MAY be completely wrong but this is how i was led to belive it was.

(anyone please correct me if im taking pissh)

the difference between pink powder and topspec is the fact that topspec is a pelleted product. pink powder is a very concentrated feed balancer in it's own right.

balancers are designed to do just that..balance a ration!! they can be used in a number of ways, 1)for condition gain..the yeast/probiotic ingredient will help the horse make the most of it's food, a balancer on it's own will not help weightgain due to the fact there simply isn't enough calories in 500g of balancer!! so for weightgain you would top up a ration with a balancer.
2) when feeding a forage only diet a balancer will make up any deficincies in grazing/hay etc with essential vits/mins, ideal for good doers on reduced rations, as they will be getting all the vits/mins they need without the calories.

reg pink powder, it can be used in a concentrated form at times of stress, i.e moving from a winter field to a lusher summer pasture, or after antibiotics or worming, when the gut may need a little help.
the main difference between balancers and " normal" vit/min supplements is that balancers contain yeast/probiotics, whereas not all vit/min supplements do, vit supplements are designde to be fed in 50 -100g amounts for and average horse, balancers tend to be 500g RDA for a 500kg (average) horse.
balancers will also contain high quality protien, maybe as much as 25% - but don't worry this will not cause laminitis.

Ok so i wasnt MILES off. Thanks Lilym for clearing MY confuzzledness.
