Just saw the ILPH with the 'biggest' horse. He has been taken in as his owners were no longer able to care for him properly.
What I dont get is there are so many needy horses out there, why do charities have, for eg retired police horses, and how do these owners get their horses into the charities when I've seen others on here be unable to?

exactly they dont help normal struggling people , but make sure they take in the ones that get them on the telly etc. then wonder why they all end up at people like mr grey ? so realisically alot of horses suffer because charities refuse to help .

I don't think it is a case that they refuse to help but that finances only allow them to help so many animals. Otherwise they would have everyone dumping their old/unrideable animals rather than find them new companion homes or pay retirement livery.

I think if you have an animal you are no longer in a position to take care of and are unable to find it a new home then you should seriously consider having the animal PTS. IF you can't afford that then you should not have animals in the 1st place.

Yes, but if they can only take inso many why police horses which I'm sure could have other homes found?

A number of police forces send retired horses to ILPH for rehoming, presumably because 'operational requirements' means there is no guarantee that the same officer will be available to oversee the horse's future needs (for example, if a loan home doesn't work out.) The ILPH are set up for - and experienced with - rehoming.

Some police horses may not be suitable for rehoming and I know some forces send them to the Horse Trust. I don't see a problem with this. Police horses are - effectively - public servants. They are maintained during their working lives by the taxpayers - and deserve a decent retirement. They are in rather a different category than horses owned by individuals.

I still personally don't see why the police forces do not take it upon themselves rather than using up space a perhaps more needy horse could use.

if thats the case police horses should be sent to retirement homes, NOT rescue centres. i had a 30yr old arab dumped in my field skin and bone and not one charity would help me. i didnt even have a rug to fit the poor buggar appealed on here for a kind essex person to donate one and all i got was "try robinsons, e bay etc " so personally think its all a farce. oh by the way all you horrified horse lovers thanks for the offer of a rug . oh no hang on there wasnt any.

You could have pulled your finger out and got a rug yourself - most are about £35 quid from Robinsons, why's it up to some random people on a forum. If I buy a rug its going on my horse thank you very much, or on one of my old ponies. People probably didn't like your attitude then either - thats why nobody offered any help.

I never donate to private individuals who are making some sort of appeal, and I make no apology for that. I've seen too many people con forum users for their own gain:
The mini shetland funded by a website and given to a member, who as it turns out is very well off and wanted a companion anyway.
The lady who claimed to be "rescuing" from a well-known dealer, took the money but didn't buy a horse.
The girl who appealed for rugs and sold all the excess donated on EBay.
I donate to charities so that someone is accountable and I can know exactly where it is going.
A 30 yr old Arab that was skin and bone... I've seen several people appeal on forums for help with horses in poor state like this. Each time sanctuaries like EMW etc have stepped in and taken them, or helped to re-home them. But why should they take a horse on retirement that someone owns and no longer has a use for? That is the responsibility of the owner.

Does anyone know whether the police make any financial contribution towards the cost of retiring their ex-police horses to these charities? I would have thought that this is the case, but perhaps I am being naive .....

kvs i did buy him a rug and as for attitude mynes fine . yours however stinks of selfishness.
tinypony this was NOT my horse i have 4 ponys all cared for to the best of my ability im a hard working single parent, this horse was dumped in my field, money is v tight and weather was [****] just wondered if any one could help me as i had nothing bigger than 5ft. irang every sactuary i could and no one would take him, or seemed to care. just like this forum . unless you can jump on the bandwagon you dont care , fine by me. ive been told and wont ask again. hope no one does it to you.

Just curious...do you own your own yard? Or how did the Arab get 'dumped' on you?

no i dont own a yard i have a lease on 8 acres , and the police said the gate had been lifted of its hinges as it hadnt got the security bits on unlocked end.

I can kind of understand people wanting places like the ILPH to rehome horses as they retain ownership and perform regular(ish) checks on them in their new homes.

I can't believe someone who can afford to lease eight acres of land to themself and can afford to keep four ponies of their own would have the cheek to try to beg for a rug from total strangers. You hardly had to build it a stable or anything did you? You have come on here attacking people for not helping you, when some are making a tremendous effort to offer help where its REALLY needed, and compared to them I agree I am ashamed to say I am selfish - but IMO, you don't sound like you need or deserve help, at it seems that the charities that you appealed to agreed with me.

kvs your just a total idiot your opinion counts for nothing , and i wont be little myself in arguing with you . thank god no ones dumped a horse on you it wouldnt stand a chance lmao

Wrong. If somebody dumped a horse on me it would be well taken care of, by me, and provided for by me until I found a home for it or got legal permission to have it PTS. And no, I'm not wadded - but I certainly would not go cap in hand to strangers. I'm glad you are not going to argue this further, your spelling mistakes are getting on my nerves.

Woa, hang on. It will not help your cause to sling insults at people. Have you still got this horse and if you have how do you know he/she is 30yrs old? I am surprised that the ILPH did not help you or did they suggest pts? It is very hard when you take on an old animal it does stretch the funds, could you not do fund raising at your childrens school or local riding school? You would get more sympathetic responses if you try all avenues, and before you ask, yes I do have experience of elderly Arabians and other breeds by eldest pony is 38 and the youngest (Arab) is 7yrs. My Husband works long hours to keep all the animals and we do not have holidays, flash cars etc, but that is OUR choice. I wish you luck!

Martyna, you're missing my point by miles. All of the people above made good cases, horses were dumped on them, or needed to be rescued before going to meat etc - but we didn't really know who they were, and we don't know who you are either. And they were either lying or at my most generous stretching the truth.
So, again, I'm simply explaining to you why I only give to registered charities.
p.s. Last year I raised nearly £3,000 for an equine charity that I know would have tried to help you. So label me selfish if you like mate.

had the vet check him over duke and he estimated 30 plus. i dont need to fund raise i just needed a 6ft rug , i have one now. and i will care for him best i can.

If your post had been a plea for a dumped horse to find help, then I'm sure that there are a few people here who could have done something. As it was, you just asked for a rug for a horse that you had acquired, which I'm sure you can understand is a completely different situation.

tiny pony had to word it that way as it was being looked into by the police and just incase its owner was on the forum couldnt say anything else, now the investigation has come to nothing i can.

tiny pony i think all you do is read old posts and slate people, like the poor girl who is trying to defend her horse (the one that was hit ) to be honest i havent got time for people like you . i have a life and ponys to look after. so carry on slating people what goes around comes around.
