My pal has a Standardbred ex trotter. She got him at 12 and did showing (riding horse), SJ etc with him. Although his legs were shot from the racing he is now 27 and still with us, and she pampers him like a baby. He is very dark brown, no white with a big personality!
Hiya, I have 2 standardbred trotters. One was a pacer and the other was a trotter back in their racing days. We live in NZ and Harness Racing is popular here and they can be picked up cheap once they finish racing. Both of mine are 6yr olds and are going to be used for fun hacking. Have been told repeatedly that Standardbreds are generally very sensible horses and that the trotters tend to be slightly hotter than the pacers, and my boys fit this description exactly! There is a bit of descrimination against standardbreds over here, people think they are ugly and only any good for trotting in straight lines (Not true) and sadly many end up in pet food cans. There is an Australian website (horseproblems.au) that has excellent info on retraining them. Far from ugly I think the majority are lovely looking and I am often asked where I got my warmblood from!!
Good Luck with your trotters, I would not be without my boys!!
i have 2 a mare and a well her yearling now .. i think at some point she has been paced she seems fine in a lovely trot but as soon as you ask for canter she really goes for it....but still doenst canter poor thing .. take her out down the lane and her head high and shes trotting on the spot .. now i dont know if that can be solved as she will only be used now for a hacker... any help i would love ...... im not sure what she is crossed with i do know the stallion was a piebald trotter...

You should be able to tell this easily...
I think, a trotter moves its legs in diangonal pairs like the conventional trot that we all know, whereas a pacer moves both left legs then both right legs together. I may be wrong though and will willingly stand corrected!
We have just bought one. Well she was bred from two trotters - pacers but she has never been used as such. She does have the paces but is a cracking showjumper. The paces only come out when my daughter lets her run on. She only got her Sunday and rode her three times prior so its a case of getting to know each other. Who she came from does breed trotters for raceing. Her full sister is a showjumper but also races.
We had an Irish Standard bred trotter - now passed away. She was a star. She did race before she came to us but my eldest daughter re-schooled her and she would have made a fab eventer.
Why do you ask?
