Hello,
My name is Laura Stacey and I am studying an animal management course at Norton Radstock College. As part of my course I am required to carry out a project. My choice of project was to design an enrichment item, or toy, for horses. If you could fill out my questionnaire it will be greatly appreciated.

Likit tounge twister, a ball fitted to the wall with space for two small likits that twists around when licked.

Yes it does keep my horse entertained and she cant cheat with it ie pin it against a wall and just eat the likit in one go, she has to work for it so it keeps her entertained longer.

I have tried toys without food treats/rewards and have never had a horse that will regularly use them

Treat balls (hollow ball with hole in that drops treats when kicked/rolled)

I found that it stopped the vices when she had it but when she didnt have it she ot bored and became distructive

Something that keeps them occupied such as a toy or feeder. Or something that helps mimic natural foraging behaviour in an unnatural environment (i.e. the stable).

Lick-it holder with an Uncle Jimmy's Sugar Free Licky Thing in. I like the fact that it's sugar free so won't cause him to be high on sugar! The refills are inexpensive at around £4 a time. They last quite a long time too, up to 4 weeks.




4. Do you consider it to be an effective product, i.e. does it keep your horse entertained? Please explain...
Yes, he likes playing with it, he's developed the knack of pinning it up against the wall! Once it's worn down a bit though he has to lick it due to the design of the holder.




5. Do you prefer in-stable toys or ones for the field/outside areas?
Stable toys

Yes, especially sugar free ones.

He is a very food orientated horse! I think he would get board very quickly if there was no "reward" in it for him.

Lickit, as stated.

He doesn't have any vices, it just gives him something else to do when he is stuck in with the bad weather.

I use Likit's from time to time, as both my horses are very food orientated and it keeps them entertained for a while.

For a while, although they don't last long!

Either, although I find my horses don't tend to get bored when out in the field

I did find my boy tends to put his head in the air a lot now as if looking for the likit when it isn't there anymore!

Something which stops him from being bored.

Likit ball that you fill with pony nuts.

4. Do you consider it to be an effective product, i.e. does it keep your horse entertained? It can be useful sometimes, but he "beaches" it in his straw and then loses interest. Or starts digging through his bed looking for lost pony nuts. He also gets frustrated with it and starts booting it with his front legs - I'm surprised he hasn't busted it yet.

5. Do you prefer in-stable toys or ones for the field/outside areas?
In stable - he spends most of his time in the field eating, and most toys would just get all muddy.

6. What do you think is important when it comes to selecting a horse toy?
Effectiveness - it needs to hold the horse's attention.

Yes, but not sugar-based ones.

8. Would you consider a product that is not food based?
Yes

No, I haven't found anything that works well yet.

My horse doesn't have any vices to stop, but he does make a lot of noise smacking his treat ball around which is fairly annoying.

Yes

Yes

But at this price, I would probably want to borrow one first to check it would work for my horse.

Something to stop them from getting bored, keep their minds working/busy and prevent vices (crib biting, wind sucking).

Lickits, food balls, hanging carrots and turnips in her stable.

Yes, keeps her busy. When she is in without things to do she starts calling and shouting.

Stable!

Yes but only because Libby is so foody and prefers them!

Food ball, keeps her entertained for the longest period.

Yes, stops her calling and shouting.

Yes for Captain No for Fany, she is not interested

Cappy has a treat ball the hexagonal one, he enjoys it and is always pleased to play with it. He also has a rotating lick holder, a gymn ball to play football with and a jolly ball, the apple one which he hates

His treat ball and his gym ball are both effective, he enjoys playing with them and gets excited when his treat ball comes out.

Stable one, imho they should not need them in field. His gym ball is for the indoor arena when he when he wants to play football

keep his attention, there is no point in buying something and him losing interest in seconds. Colour is irrelevant so is size, cost is important as it has to be worth the money.

Not necessarily, one of his favs is one isn't.

His gym ball is my fav as it engages his interest gives him exercise and helps with co-ordination. His fav is his treat ball.

His treatball will stop him banging for attention

An oval shaped, hollow, plastic ball with holes in. Fill it with treats.
Chose it because I can fill it with healthy treats I choose and it was in my local saddlery, so it was easy to buy.

Yes! Len absolutely loves it! He will leave his feed and hay to play with it

Likit and salt block hanging from stable beam, and a mini football.

The likit lasted 2 days (6 month old foal broke the ball off the end - very durable not), but he loves the salt block, and hasnt so much as looked at the football.

It's creating an environment for the horse that is as close to his natural environment as possible.

Yes.

Masses of turnout with company and a routine that reassures him. My horses are out 3pm to 9am, all year. Occasionally, I will put a cabbage or swede into the stable to mimic the natural foraging activity of the horse.

4. Do you consider it to be an effective product, i.e. does it keep your horse entertained? Please explain...
It's brilliantly effective. My horses don't need to be entertained because they have as much natural turnout as possible so use their stable time to sleep and munch on haylage.

5. Do you prefer in-stable toys or ones for the field/outside areas?
Neither, although if a horse has to have box rest I'd certainly try a treat ball.

6. What do you think is important when it comes to selecting a horse toy?

Because foraging for food 18 hours a day is what thousands and thousands of years of evolution have programmed the horse for doing. If they have to stand for hours in a stable, then it is only fair to try to offer an alternative that is as close to the real thing as possible.

A cabbage.

None of them has any problems.

Don't know what you mean.

Not really.

£1 buys a cabbage, or 2 cabbages if you can track down farm produce or Tescos past the sell by date.

yes very, its slow release so she doesnt finish it too fast

Colour- bright so its interesting (although this may be more for me!)

Entertainment, fun they wouldn't normally have.


2. Do you already use an enrichment item for your horse?
No - because the one I do have stabled, is so because she's very sugar sensitive and has to be kept off grass for most of the day. Nearly every 'enrichment' item is sugar based, and she's not young enough to be bothered with playing with hanging things. Used to have one of the balls you roll and the feed drops out, but she doesn't get much hard feed now, and never runs out of forage so no longer needed.

When we had the ball that rolled it helped for a bit while she was stabled 24/7 with lami (had high fibre cubes in it).

Yes

Yes but only for a short period of time.

In stable, because outside ones are mightily expensive.

keeping their mind active, preventing boredom and encouraging him/her to investigate or play with things for enjoyment.

I'm not doing the full thing because i'm lazy! Surely enrichment for a horse is to be turned out grazing?

My friends horse has a decahedron in every night and he brays at the door until he's given it then rushes the door making faces at you. Treats teach bad manners if you ask me. All we're doing is "treating" this behaviour because we still give him the bloody thing after all the creation!

The same horse also crib bites like a barsteward and she insists he has said decahedron every night as it stops him doing it, which it doesn't. He has massive nets full of haylage and he still likes to gulp on the door so no, nothing stops him.

As you can tell, I'm a great believer in not treating horses!

Dee has a "swwetie ball" its a dodecahedron shaped ball with a hole in the top- I put a hand ful of pony nuts in it and she enjoys kicking it about to get the sweeties :)

Yep - Dee loves it , she has it every night and it provides her with something else to do. And I like the fact that in the snow it could also be used outside :) She loves playing with it too, even once she has munched all the pony nuts out of it!

Stable - seen as when she's in the field she's generally eating anyway :)

Although I prefer low sugar treats - she has lick its as a once off treat as they are soo full of sugar

Dee wouldn't see the point of a toy which didn't give her food! And I doubt that she would persevere with it and I imagine she would just ignore it!

Dee doesn't have any stable vices, but her sweetie ball keeps her entertained and its when I don't give it to her that she kicks her stable door :rolleyes:

It is a decahedron horse ball. Its a hollow decahedron shaped ball which you fill with treats and the horse has to roll and play with the ball to get these treats
