Have made a hard decision to sell Gem early next year once shes back fit again, she looks like a hairy donkey at the moment after being turned away for 3 months after my back operation!
I never honestly thought id sell her this time last year but ive done a lot of thinking the last few months and think its the right thing to do. One of those reasons being ive realised i want to concentrate more on dressage than jumping, and she really really loves to jump so i feel shes being wasted here with me.
Shes a 16.2hh, 9 year old, AES Warmblood with good bloodlines including Atlantus Z and Ahorn. She was also KWPN ster graded as a 4 year old, and bred a lovely foal who is 5 now and has one hell of a pop from the photos ive seen from her breeder in wales. She's jumped and been well placed Bsja up to Discovery level and has over £140 notional winnings, although she hasnt jumped affiliated for nearly 3 years due to me being a total wimp! Shes also done well at unaff dressage up to novice and been placed every time out, with very good comments from judges and the potential to go much further. Shes pretty straightforward to ride, forward going but not strong or difficult (i was a real novice when i bought her and shes taught me loads) Shes also easy to hack out, box, load, clip, shoe etc, and has a fantastic temperment, not mareish in the slightest and even a child could lead her around shes so good!
Ive never sold a horse before so havent a clue what to ask for her, it will be utterly gut-wrenching to let her go but deep down i know its the right thing for both of us, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Shes the horse in my siggy, but heres some better pics of her taken at our first dressage comp this summer where she came 2nd, just click next to see the others.

I would agree with around £5K, but of course you shall have to take into account what the market is like once you have her fit and are ready to advertise

Really, i was hoping for at least £6.5k, paid nearly 10k 3 years ago, and although shes a bit older and hasnt jumped at that height for a while, dont think theres any reason she wouldnt do well at Bsja again with a different, slightly braver rider!
Will probably advertise her early next spring, but didnt realise the market was that bad

Well my horse has more recent winnings jumping bigger, and hunts and events, he is 10 but people are saying 7k is a push. I think if mine is realistically worth about 6k - your mare is worth about 5k.

i agree with the others- around £4.5-5k.

when you bought her she was 5/6 so had a lot of 'potential' but really since then hasn't done a lot to keep her value up at that level.

she is a really lovely looking mare but many people looking for a horse to take on with potential aren't looking at 9/10yros.

Yes £5k was the figure that immediately sprang to mind to me. Considering she will be 10 next year and her BSJA record is 3 years old she has not proved herself much. If she were a gelding I would actually say less than that £3.5k - £4k it is her breeding potential that I see keeping it as high as £5k

The fact of the matter is that you bought a 6yr old with good recent competition results and lots of potential to go on and do more. Most of what you paid for her would have been for the potential she showed to compete successfully at a decent level affiliated.

Unfortunately, although you know she is every bit as wonderful as she was when you got her, on paper she is a nice allrounder with some old results BSJA and some good recent results at Novice level dressage, and that makes her worth around 5k. 9 isn't old by any means, but the fact of the matter is that you can't add money on potential unless you've got something to actually back it up.

If I was you, I would get a friend or instructor to take her out and do some BSJA over winter. If you could get her some recent winnings, or some DCs at Disc or Newcomers, then I think you'd have no problem selling her as a showjumper for around 6-7.5k depending on how she did.

If you want to sell her as a jumper and want to get a higher price for her, then I would suggest finding a rider to take her out BSJAing a few times, to prove to potential buyers she can still do the job.

Agreed, disc isn't big, its tiny! so saying she'll jump this wouldn't out her value up. I would be looking at around the 4k mark, someone will deff have her then as she sounds like a nice type.

Just to ad i have just sold a coloured 8 yr old mare for £3800, she prob better on paper than your mare but has also had a break from proper competing so I took this for her. She was a real event stamp, super breeding and a proven broodmare, i have had an unbelievable amount of phone calls and she sold in 4 days, so it depends if your pricing to sell or not at the moment.

Well I've seen plenty that have done less than your mare at the £5k mark, geldings too. I wouldn't think hitting £5k would be too tough given her breeding and winnings. Though I think the market is tougher above that. You might need to either chuck in a full wardrobe or be prepared to come down from £5k to clinch a sale though.

I agree with the others see if you can get someone to compete her to add value. You could probably get someone to do it for free if you paid their entries. Think about getting her hunting too.

I'd advertise her as a show jumper and add that she has potential to event as her dressage is going well.

i just paid 8000 for a gelding that was just like her (had competed medium dressage though but not for a long while and jumping discovery). He passed a 7 stage vetting.

Advertise her for what you want though and eventually you will find the right home for her, if no one is interested then you can always lower the price. Plus she is a mare and can breed a nice foal so she should be worth more than mine! If you cant sell her as she is a showjumper you could always send her away to a well known yard like andy austins yard to be sold from, where word of mouth could get her sold!

I agree because she hasn't carried on progressing her career further there will be a lot of 9 year old's higher up the B.S.J.A classes at that age, unfortunately the market is that bad, I was offered £8,000 for my coloured as 3 year old and ive recently taken £6,000 for him as a 6 year old who has continuously proven himself in the show ring over one season.

I would say £4,500 as a max really. She may have done BSJA before you got her, but she's done very little to warrant a higher price tag in the last 3 years. Sorry.

If you want to up it slightly, I'd ask someone to BSJA her over the winter.
