A REALLY stupid question in relation to the stallion post below.

I have just realised that although I know a little about stallions, and I have been taught about mares seasons, I cannot remember about seasons.

Can someone refresh me? I think having a mare arriving in the next few weeks I'm going to need to know

.

What months do they run for?

They're normally from March to October, last a couple of days and occur every 3 weeks or so

I find they last longer...about 5 days in total...a day when the mare is squealy at the beginning, about 3 tarty days

and another squealy day at the end....my mare is just having her last rather confused season now...

PF seems to be in season all the time, but it's actually every 3 weeks or so although the actual randiness seems to go on for ever! She started in JULY (mid winter here) and is, of course, still going strong.
Some mares you won't even notice are in season. PF, on the other hand, gets very flirty and starts chatting up horses she never would've oridinarily given her phone number to

LOL! You've met PF then?

5 days is about right for her too.

I'm quite lucky in that my mare only shows anything at all during her first and last seasons of the year...and she cycles Feb/Mar right up to November. She's a bit confused at the start/finish seasons...and I think that's because her hormones don't bring her into a true season. At the moment she's chatting up another forummer's gelding...then looking puzzled and going back to her hay...she's not in full control of herself, bless her!

Goes to show how unobservant I am!
Mine don't really show their seasons - no squeals, squirts or tartiness from Chloe in the 7 years we've had her, and Meg just gets a bit grumpier when schooled

Its a 21 day cycle. it starts in spring when the longer daylight and warmer temperatures stimulate I believe the pineal gland. Some mares will cycle all year but not that common. 5/6 days in oestrus, 15/16 out.

When daylight hours shorten and it gets colder, it all shuts down again.

Oooh, the hours I've spent working all this out to get that baggage of mine in foal!

I've had my mare since February (first one, only had geldings before her) and so far I've never been able to tell when she's been in season (touch wood!)

This year has been an odd one mind. My mare is very "silent" in her seasons but decided to show me she was in season one day. I thought great - I can work her seasons out for stud now.

Stupid me thinking that, it seems the cold and damp summer persuaded the mares it was autumn and lots of people had trouble with mares not coming into season. Mine took several scans and two jabs to get her in season and covered. It was a bleedin nightmare!

Mine has never been flirty with geldings, and when she wasn't in season boy she let us know, but apparently when full in season she was an uber-slut but only for the real man of the yard, not the geldings!
