I just wanted to post how impressed I have been with the service at NFU!

Grace firstly injured her suspensory ligament, so I claimed for her initial diagnosis (xrays, scans, nerve blocks, three days at the clinic), and then the shock wave treatment and further scans. This was all paid, apart from my excess, in full which came to £1,887 in totasl!

Then, just two weeks after filing this claim, I then claimed for her colic surgery and post-surgical treatment, and withing two weeks of placing the claim, NFU paid out £4,200 (including half of the livery fees) to Leahurst.

So in less than a month, they have paid out just over £6000 without any worry or stress caused to me... I am very very impressed with their service, and they have corresponded with me regarding everything!

I have been with NFU for years, and have made two big claims of them.

Like Becki - I was equally impressed with their service. Some may say they are a little on the expensive side. However, they're service can't be faulted, and they're worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you for posting this - I am at the moment not very impressed with my insurance company (not NFU)- I currently have a death by injury claim ongoing and they are being very slow about it! The horse was put to sleep in September and they took until recently to advise me that they still required additional information!
I also have insured my new horse with said company - but maybe NFU will be getting a phone call!
Thank you for the recommendation!

I have spoken to NFU and got an indication of policy costs this morning.

Our current insurer is the dreaded E&L....I will say no more, but as soon as our claim is finally settled, we WILL be changing insurers and NFU is looking pretty good.

It is good to hear from so many satisfied customers.

NFU are fantastic. We had to claim for a stolen trailer and they were superb, couldn't fault them. Hoping to not have to ever claim for the horses of course, but have absolute faith that if I needed to they would come up trumps.

Great company, very professional and friendly to deal with.

I'm really glad that there are lots of people who are pleased with NFU but when I phoned to take out a horse policy with them they refused my custom unless I took out another policy with them for house insurance or something else. I was not impressed as I was not a house owner and had already insured my car. I told them how unfair this was and never had so much as a reply

I think they might have been going through a boom at the time and decided they didn't want one policy people

I am with NFU and so far they have been fab !

I have a £4000 claim on my horse box (comprehesive cover thank goodness) - premiums didnt go up by much at all - and just recently had a £2,500 claim with my girly at the wonderful Leahurst.

So, as long as the girly's insurance requote doesnt go through the roof for this next year, I will certainly be staying with them !

Just for balance - my best friend had a claim with Carriage House for in excess of £5k and they were very good too !!

same here when I had Higgs I claimed for a root tooth infection and they paid out about £1.5k and when I lost him to grass sickness the claim including loss of Higgs went into 5 figures - again no hassle extremely sympathetic and efficient staff. will continue with them for definate

Also got horsebox covered with them and when it wouldn't start one morning had excellent service from them too

NFU settled a smallish claim (in comparison to the ones above) for me very quickly with no hassle.

Regarding multiple policies, my OH already had his car insured with them so perhaps that's why they insured me lol. We have insured several other items with them since and they are working out the cheapest everytime.

NFU all the way

I have been with them for 6 years. Unfortunately during that period I have had several claims, all settled in a timely, efficient manner

Yup im with them aswell and agree they are good, paid our my last mares vet/stabling fees no worries...

On the subject of horse insurance and loss of use. When you set up and say what you want them covered loss of use for, do you just say either SJ or BD or eventing etc?

Just thinking as when i did mine with Star years ago, cocvered loss of use, i put she's used for SJ, BD, schooling, hacking. So does that mean if i claim loss of use for say SJ, they wouldnt pay out as she could still BD or school etc??? Is it best to just note one thing down??

Thanks if you understand that lol

The NFU Mutual policy states that if LOU cover is operative we will pay if an animal insured becomes permanently unable to perform one or more of the use(s) for which it is kept and insured directly due to an accident, illness or disease which appears during the period of insurance. Other conditions apply i.e horse given time to recover etc. Hope this helps.

If she is permanently unable to perform one or more then she could be liable. The definition of permanent inability or permanently unable is complete inability or failure and not just a reduction in ability or performance which is proven to the satisfaction of both your and the NFU Mutual vets. If you think a claim is likely contact your local office who hold your insurance and they can pass you on to the claims department who can advise you, I can only quote the policy wording.

another vote for NFU.

the chestnut in my sig went to the AHT for lameness issues.
it was found he had navicular and is now retired.
he had loads of tests for this and was there for a full 10 days.

Nfu had paid his £1970 bill within a fortnight - including half the stabling fees.

Thanks for the help...no i dont have any issues or claims ive just been thinking about it lately and wondering whether i should check it and change it, ill still give somone a ring anyway. Thanks

I have been with NFU for about 12 years - all my horses, my farm and my livery business. They have been brilliant with the one large claim I had to make and it is great to talk to people who:
a) have english as their first language and
b) know one end of the horse from another. and
c) don't exclude parts of teh anatomy for stupid reasons.

Well done NFU

Good! I'm with them too!

Touch wood I've never had to claim but it's always good to hear good reports (as well as the bad!) about these insurance companies!

Does anyone know if they have extended the age that they will no longer cover for vets fees? No panic yet, flora is only 10, but last I heard NFU wouldn't provide it after 15. Pet Plan, realising that horses are no longer elderly at 15, have extended it to 20 so long as horses are already insured with them in their mid-teens. I'd rather like to stay with NFU, but if they don't modernise on this issue, I'll be forced to change company in a few years!

i also have found NFU to give excellent service and settle claims quickly, however when we claimed for a stress fracture in a fetlock, they excluded any condition concerning both fetlocks despite a letter from the vet saying it was unnescesary to exclude the other leg. Having said that this may be normal practice for insurance companies and we still have all of the horses, horsebox and cars with them.
