If a horse is a rig (tested) he's ok with geldings but cant be kept with Mares. Otherwise good health, easy to handle etc would it be ok as a companion to 2 geldings? (for when one is being ridden)
What issues might i face or should it be fine as long as no mares around?
Its my own field/stables so there will never be a mare turn up!

I don't seee why not if he's ok with geldings. We had a rig in our field of 7 boys & he was never a problem.. mares were always kept on the opposite side of the farm.

Ok great thanks, i thought as much but have never known a proper rig before so was not 100% sure!

There is one issue that may cause a problem - presumably one or both testicles are retatained?

It is fairly common for the retained testicle to become cancerous (as far as I understand) - so it may be worth ringing your vet to discuss whether or not this could be a serious concern or it could prove costly.

Temperaments of rigs vary considerably - but with only geldings for company I can't see you having any problems on that front.

I had mine castrated recently - fees varied from £350 - £850 (all in) dependant on where the errant testicle was hiding - but prices vary considerably between vets so def worth shopping around if you need to go down that route!

Thats very interesting thank you- its a free companion so obviously i dont want to be forking out a small fortune on having him gelded or cancer treatments (apart from the cash i'm a sap and will avoid all heart ache possible)
