Hi

I have just taken on a new yard and have had to convert a foaling box into a tack room. We are puttin a roof so that the room is secure however there is still a stable door at the front (currentlt padlocked) and a grill (quite high) above the door. I have looked into it and it would appear most insurance companies require a 5 level mortice but it is really hard to figure out if they tend to have many other special requirements.

Do I need to change the door to a new door??

So many questions!! thank you HHOers :-)

We have a double thickness wooden door with a padlock that is inside a box as such so the padlock goes through a gap in the bottom and then a metal cage door that is also padlocked. It is also alarmed - this was done to our insurance recommendations not sure if it is different as it is a riding school so therefore a business.

well this is a small livery/rehab business probably dont have anywhere near the same amount of tack as a riding school though. I am trying to find affordable door options but a lot of them seem to have external hinges!

You need to ask to speak to your insurers and take on board their suggestions. Also its no good having the worlds strongest door or locks if the walls can be driven into with a vehicle.

There is only so much you can do but the insurers are the ones you need to take advice from on this.

There is no such thing as a secure tack room. Unless you live on and have an alarm I wouldn't leave tack at the yard. If they want to get in they will and the more locks you put on the more damage they will cause.

Its wrong but an unfortunate fact.

Take you tack home, its the only way.

Maybedaisy is right, if they want it they will get it.
It's almost as if it's their god given right to have your tack.
Over the last 22 years repairing saddlery etc on site at stables, I have been at yards several times just after they have been raided, including the thieves going in through the roof dismantling it as they went, smashing through walls and even when the tack was locked in a metal shipping container with HUGE padlocks on, the thieves calmly fired up a petrol driven angle grinder in the early hours of the morning (when in close proximity to houses etc) and ground the brackets off leaving the still locked padlocks on the ground!
Cleared all the tack out and of course, NO one heard a thing!
I have seen rugs with painted on postcodes in LARGE white letters taken off of horses in fields over night in the middle of winter, leaving the poor clipped out horses shivering.
Callous or what.
ONLY place I would have tack is in my home and then out of sight and under lock, key, alarm & with my 3 dogs with big teeth and attitudes to welcome univited guests on duty!
No where is 100% in reality, all you can do is lessen the risk so you can claim on insurance.
