Please bear with the long explanation.

As some may know, a year ago we lost our beloved old clydesdale and whilst Cairo can never be replaced, shortly afterwards a perfect mare turned up who we bought. My OH's relationship with Cairo was amazing - that horse was his best friend and his stress relief from a very busy and stressful job. He still misses him as if he died yesterday.

Farra is now 5, and needs time to grow and fill out, which she is starting to do. My OH is built for comfort not speed. He is trying to get the weight off, but is still just over 17 stone and until he gets down to 15, cannot ride Farra. Clydes are bred to pull not carry, and while she could carry 17 stone, not until she has finished growing which is 7 at the earliest.

It is going to be another year before he can ride her at the earliest, assuming the weight comes off, or longer if it does not. He is wanting to do more than a bit of long reining, lunging, loose schooling to try to build up his relationship with her.

He has said that he is very interested in some of the NH/Parelli games - I have had a look on the NH horse site and wondered if anyone knew anything about Liz Pitman who is not too far from us.

If anyone can let me know about her or recommend a good NH instructor who could give him a few lessons on doing some games where they could both learn and have fun, it would be so appreciated.

Long term he wants to hack out western and maybe have a go at low level le trec.

It needs to be an instructor, I could show him things I did with Chancer, but as you know, to keep a marriage sweet, never try to teach your other half.

I have had an Intelligent horsemanship RA out to work with my boy. I know its not quite the same, but he showed me some de-spooking games etc that i could do with my horse. You can find RA's on the IH website. Don't know if that's really what you are after though

I have a friend who has a disability which means she finds it hard to ride sometimnes, she loves parrelli games, not sure who she uses to teach. I had a IH approved instuctor (from Kelly Marks website) out once to do some work with my daughter and her horse and felt it was very positive, but we had specific issues to overcome. The best thing would prob be to give the lady a ring and have a chat, perhaps she could go through the excecises in the perfect manners books or something.

That is what I want. Liz is an RA on their site - basically I want someone who will teach him some games and she could do with a bit of work on her spacial awareness - she is a big clumsy lump some days.

What I don't want is someone who is more concerned with looking flash than actual work - I personally do not like the stuff on TV with the Parelli lot, far prefer Monty Roberts/ Richard Maxwell type of training.

Go on the Intelligent horsemanship website and contact your local RA. I had one out last year to help with a loading issue and it's worth the money. Think I paid £30 for an hour.

She sorted out the issue and also taught me some good exercises to do regularly.

I really like Richard Maxwell too. Have you got his books/dvd? They are really easy to follow and give you lots of food for thought! I particularly liked the book 'unlock your horses talent in 20 mins a day' - it covers lots of ground work aspects. so does his DVD, think its called 'Maximise your horses potential'.
