Since we've had omar we have had problems with him and the speed he goes through shoes.
With our last farrier we were getting about 3 weeks wear before he was going through them. He tried Tungsten weld and road nails but nothing was helping.
We have changed farriers and he has had slightly more success in so far as 3 shoes seem to be doing ok but his rear right shoe has worn down again in a 1.5 inch strip on the outside of the shoe. This is after 2 weeks and about 20 ish miles on mixed terrain (this is an increase in hacking to when the other farrier did him and is about equivalent to 4 weeks worth of weekend hacking).
The farrier has attempted to straighten Omars feet and placed road studs on the outside of the shoes at the back.

Has anyone experence of horses going through shoes really quickly? any ideas as to what we can try next? I'm starting to bash my head against a brick wall! Any advice gratefully received

Have you had his back checked, our young cob was hearing her backs out on the outside in 3 weeks, we had her back checked and she is now wearing them square and they are lasting 5 weeks.

The new farrier is obviously helping. It can take a long time to balance the feet as you can only do so much each time. How does the horse move? Is the wearing down just due to foot balance or movement too?
Extensions can stop the foot going in/out so much instead of straight. Youve probably tried a heavier section of steel?

hmm sounds like issue for vet and/or back specialist rather than a farrier, the uneven wear, whilst it may b a conformational issue that wont change could definately be an issue with a subtle lameness or back problem.

Hovis_and_SidsMum pm'd me and i hope you guys that some of my suggestions are useful/helpful!!

Let me know how it goes and what the back person had to say

H used to go through shoes like no-one's business when he was younger but it was a balance/maturity issue - he'd quite often wear them through at the toe. As he got older, stronger and more co-ordinated he grew out of it.
