A 'snaffle mouthed' rant.

Bits, even expensive bits, don't cost that much. If you are worried about such a nugatory sum do you think you are able to afford to keep three horses  Just curious because the cost of buying and keeping a young, fit eventer will be a lot higher than the cost of purchasing two or three bits until you find the one(s) she goes best in.

you must be much better off then me :o i couldnt afford to go out and buy a few bits to try my horses in. id have to borrow of friends and then buy the one the horse went well in. money saving where i can and all that jazz

Sorry Cedars, if it was a joke I obviously didn't get it. I guess you are a wealthy couple and the joke is on me! Bit envious to be honest as I find two on full livery a bit expensive :(

I take it your post is a joke too horserider? No-one can spend tens of thousands of pounds on bits can they? If you have and none of the work you could re-coup some of your costs by selling them on.

BSJAlove, no, I'm definitely not wealthy. I wish I was  Luckily my two go sweetly loose ring snaffles or I think they do. I guess I could stand corrected on that issue too!

Not wealthy, just been saving and preparing for years and years.

But no matter, with 3 horses all of different sizes I could open a bit shop without needing to but more stock!! Haha!

I think we are all like that cedars. I have enough tack and rugs etc for ten or more horses because I've had horses for years and never seem to get round to selling anything, even if it doesn't fit any of the current incumbents :o

No, I can't sell them. They are beautiful and have to be taken out of my bit box and admired...and stroked.
I have common, ungrateful horses who seem to like cheap sweet irons best.

I must have 30 different bits and could only come up with one I was prepared to sell. (A hanging cheek rubber snaffle size 5.5 ahem)

horsegirl - I know where you are coming from - the only one I would sell is my Myler Eggbut with hooks 5.5 inch. It's not dressage legal but it is a good bit for the right horse :)

I do agree actually - OP did say she had seen video/pictures first and its pretty apparent when you go do see a horse how well it goes! I would not assume I could make the correct recommendation but would like to have seen that the owner had worked out the best combination already. So previous boy - loose ring KK for schooling, fulmer happy mouth gag for jumping and switch between snaffle and 3 ring for hacking (depending on how long had gone between hacks). When the couple came to try him it meant a complete tack change between the flat and jumping but they weren't bothered by that - in fact, they bought all "his" bits before taking receipt of him. An incorrectly bitted horse is not going to show itself off at its best and as we know, bitting a horse correctly can take a very long time!

I'm not a huge poster here but did feel that I should post. One of my main issues was just because she is novice rider why does it mean she can't have an opinion? You may not agree with it but doesn't mean that we should discount it! Also why can she not post if she is a novice? Surely it would be better to give her advice then shoot her down. Anyways just my opinion.

Regards the OP I feel that we should bit a horse in what the horse finds comfortable and works correctly in and providing safe controll to the rider. This can change between rider depending on skill/strength etc. I do feel that nowadays people feel that every horse should be bitted in a snaffle and if its not then you are a terrible rider. IMO I think this actually creates problems when people don't actually understand the action of their bit and feel just because it is a snaffle then it is 'soft'. I have seen horse hauled in the mouth in both a snaffle and a 'strong' bit.

Oh SC read it as tongue in cheek! Do you really think that we're spending a v large amount on a horse, and insuring it, and having a full 5 stage with X-rays, and I'm REALLY worried about bits? Oh. And two new saddles.....

Blinking nora ;)

But you posted very recently about not being able to afford a second dog but got the puppy anyway!

And yes - that is relevant. Do you confuse yourself as much as you do me?

There has been a bank account dedicated to this horse for literally over a decade. The puppy was going to come out of our day to day account.

Tell you what, seeing as you're so worried, report me!!

Cedars - not trying to have a go but that reply does sound odd if you are only in your early 20s. I think you are at uni so am guessing that you are no older than 22 -23 ? Have you really been saving since you were 12 to buy a third horse? Sorry but it sounds weird. You have no obligation to enlighten me regarding your circumstances but your post just doesn't add up and I am totally confused once again :(

She said 3 years ago she wasn't an adult. Also if it is you OH's horse why have you been saving for 10 years? I am just as baffled.

Stop getting so het-up for goodness sake, what on earth are you going to do when your students wind you up at school when you qualify?

cedars - i had the opposite problem when i showed my horse to someone !! he can be a bit strong in a snaflle in the school sometimes so when someone came to view him for a share the other day i thought id leave his two ring gag on as i could see he was in a 'spooky' mood ! he went the other way and totally backed off of it ! ooops my bad ! :o

Having on used French link snaffles and Pelhams in the past, when we got our new pony he had a very strange bit ( to my eye).

It is NS , can't spell it lol, WOW, how much?

I am very glad I did not have to buy it.

£80 is probably not a lot for some people, but I have never even thought of spending that much, it I had to I would, but i still think that is silly money especially ad it is tiny :)

now cedars correct me if im wrong but you are infact flamehead? the same poster that needed help in teaching a youngster to trot up, how on earth do you think you are able to take on a strong fit, tb/wb type eventer?

let alone pass judgement on an owners bitting choice thinking you know better... LOL.:)

Not half as silly as you do, with posts like the one below...

never bite the bate hunny it makes you look like a fool.. just a bit of friendley advice. :)

Seriously, I can't believe the way some people are trying to manipulate this thread. Surely it's pretty obvious that it is FH's OH who is buying the horse, and he isn't a novice, so what's the problem?!

For goodness sake it's my other half who has been saving. I'm not justifying myself any more. And I'm 21.

To be fair Cedars, you do have to take a look at WHY people feel the need to comment like this all the time.

You CAN be really judgemental. ive read alot of your posts as flamehead and thought 'really...?' as youve come across quite rude and know it all, with little experience to back it up. Or you'll post quite a controversial subject, get moaned at and then go all up in arms because it hasnt turned out the way you wanted to.

This forum is very much like real life in the way that people remember what you say and are very prepared to pull you up and say 'hang on..'.

If people are guessing who you are after just a few weeks under a new username then what does that tell you. I got the impression that you changed names because you were getting your past brought up constantly.

Not telling you how to live your life, but you know exactly what you are doing, or at least you should do by now, so if it upsets you that much then maybe stop blaming everyone else. theres no smoke without fire.

I have to say, my kyra is a fast little mare, however well schooled but in a snaffle, you can hold her better in a snaffle then you can in a pelham!a snaffle can be just as severe as a pelham in the wrong hands, but kyra will snatch and fight you if you put her in any thing stronger! every horse is different, my horse i sold a few months ago was not strong in the slightest just powerful, she would not work nicely in a snaffle, however she loved her pelham and was nice and light, but had a tendency to lean on a snaffle ...... dont know why i am putting this to be honest but every one knows there horse at the end of the day!
