A splint and a cracked hoof wall

Were what was waiting for me when I went up to see my horse today :(

The crack is relatively small and my OH is doing their feet on Monday.

The splint is small and not hot, the leg hasn't filled and he's not showing signs of lameness. He's out 24/7. I cold washed it and decided that with both the splint and crack I'll not be riding for the next wee while.

Do you think I did the right thing? How long would you say I should leave off ridden work for?

Sorry I didn't have my camera on me, it not even a half inch long from the toe up, it's pretty small and not wide, almost like the start of a sand crack. My OH is a farrier so he's going to see to all the horses feet on monday.

I'm a bit more concerned over whether I did the right thing for the splint and how long he'll need to rest for as I'm not really sure :cool:
 
As it's not hot and the horse is sound, I would cold hose twice daily for a week. Turn out as normal because movement stimulates the bone and encourages healing. Keep an eye on it and start riding when you are sure that it's inactive (eg if there's still no heat after a week).
 
Interesting post. Mine has a splint this week and a nasty crack in his hoof!
Im glad to hear turnout as normal, Ive been leaving mine out.

OP- How handy to have a farrier partner ;)
 
The crack could be a sign of seedy toe.....oh should know what you should do!! Often opening it up to let air in will mean it will grow out easily...The bang that caused the splint could have been a while ago...I would see how sound he is and go from there.

I am a very lucky girl! :D He won't accept any payment for doing their feet either, even though he was only supposed to be doing mine and somehow ended up doing my lad, mum's mare and my sisters pony! :eek: He is a lovely man though :D

Ok so a wee update, the splint has gone right down over the last few days but I'm going to give him till next week off just in case because I'm a worrier :rolleyes:

The crack in his hind is due to him being a lazy sod when he walks ha ha! When he's just bimbling along feeling a bit bored he tends to not lift his feet properly, when trotted up he moved fine and then started to pick his feet up more because we'd just done something "exciting" and engaging so I've just got to get him more active and feeling a bit more excited by what we are doing. I need to get some more trotting poles I think and then I can start doing raised poles to get him thinking about where he's putting his big cloddy cobby feet ha ha!
All in all the OH is pretty happy with his feet but feels he may need fronts on again soon with all the hacking we've been doing so I'm happy that he's happy that Loki's happy (if a little lazy) ;)

Also just a little gushy end - Loki thinks my OH is great! It never fails to make me smile seeing them all cuddled up together :D Or today having a giggle because Loki is resting his big head on OH's back as he does his feet but with his bottom lip pushed into a wierd and wonderful shape ha ha! :D Love the men in my life ;)
