Ok so i have two minature poodle 5 year old bi.tches, dog One has confirmed epilepsy, hip problems and ear problems, her coat never looks glossy but she is well fed and puts weight on too easily. Dog two is a highly strung dog, has had fits but not enough to be warrented epileptic, fab conformation and a good stamp of the breed. however she is very hormonal and a worrier and is losing weight through nervous energy.

They are both sisters from the same litter, dog one was the runt of the litter. They are not spayed (they will be) but they are NOT for breeding at anytime whatsoever, the reason behind not being spayed is timing (need to be in season at same time in order for both to have op) and dog ones epilepsy.

Currently they are fed Purine pro plan adult dog sensitive . Dog one is going to be tested for diabeteas(sp?) next week as she seems to be drinking a lot.

They are quite sensitive dogs and to rule out dog twos weight loss i want to worm them both, but due to them having sensitive tummies a) what product would you recommend and b) do i have to change their management whilst the wormer works?

They get plenty of exercise and stimulation and are not left for more then 1-2 hours at most on their own. Dog ones epilpsy seems to be getting worse (more frequent fitting but the duration is not so long and she comes out of them relatively quickly).

So, some advice please concering;
a) worming regimes for them
b) their feed, they are fed at the same time but 'swap' bowls half way through the meals. Do i need to seperate them at meal times and change dog twos diet without dog one (the dominante one i might add) nicking all the good and fattening bits?
c)Anything else that i can change about their routine?

Dog one had a phantom pregnancy one maybe two years ago and was due to be spayed straight after but she caught a virus and that had to be postponed. I know at the moment they are unspayed but then do not socialise with other dogs (they bite) and i promise you, there is no way in hell i will be breeding from them, there is enough unwanted dogs in this world. They were real rescue cases when i bought them all those years ago, and have had a number of issues, but i wouldnt swap them for the world.

ive read your post a couple of times but im still failing to see why they arent spayed:o:confused: They dont have to both be in season at the same time:confused: and surely after dog one's virus cleared up she was able to be spayed? Just do them both as individuals,wait for a season, wait another 3 months then spay. This should be a priority, especially since one has had problems with phantoms already, breeding aside, for health problems! Just getting them done may sort out some of health problems you are finding as it may be hormonally linked.(although not the weight gain on one dog). Most bitches, even they have been 'poor dooers' when entire will be more prone to putting on the podge once spayed.

Secondly, worming. Dont you worm routinely anyway:confused: She sould well have a sensitive tummy DUE to worms. Get them both some drontal tablets, its 1 tablet per 10kg so easy to use. How much do they both weigh? If 5kg or under Id 1/2 a tablet, if between 5kg and 10kg just use a whole tablet. I do mine every 3 months. No you dont have to change their management and really they should have been being done regularly.

There are better dry foods out there but tbh I think once you sort out speying and worming you will find a difference and can take it from there.

The vet at the time recommended against the spaying (they have subsequaintly left the practice. They are wormed reguarly but the vet over sees the worming, i was wondering if there were better dog wormers out there as i worry about harsh chemicals on delicate tummys

You need to spay, now. Sod all this same time, not the right moon position business, in they go and bits out. CC is absolutely right (as always)

You need to be worming regularly. We use advocate monthly, and then Milbemax every three months. Stop worrying about the sensitive tummies-they'll be more ill with worms, promise! Even with Chlo who was the queen of dodgy poo, worming never ever bothered her tummy at all.

Er, feed. Speak to Symply dog food-can't recommend it enough, not massively expensive too. They have a fab hotline if you google.

Oh, and change vets. Yours sound rubbish..! :P
