Okay, tenative post here...

I put the incident the other week down to him trying to get through the stairgate, but mindful of it all have had him with me at almost all times. The only time ever he's alone is an hour each morning whilst i do the school run and nip to the shops. Then he's shut into the hallway with all other doors shut, and front door double locked. For that hour, OH is at work and no-one can get into the flat. It's just him and four cats.
All has been fine, we've been able to go to the park again, and he's a happy little man.

yesterday I was playing with him and noticed he's lost the end of his tongue. I'm baffled, because we didnt notice this when he was poorly before, surely I or one of the vets would have seen? He's always had a big tongue that he struggles to keep in his mouth

but the end of it has literally gone, with a serrated edge. I know how crazy it sounds so here are some pics:

seriously, WTF??

we've racked our brains and only two possibilities (both of which sound mad)
1. that he's bitten it off himself in play or back when he was poorly before?
2. that the female cat we have has done it??

She does seek him out and attack him for no apparent reason, though this is only something she's started doing this last week or so. She was feral so is a bit temperamental anyway, but that's just too crazy even for her..

He's eating fine, theres no bllod, no wound, no scarring, no nothing, just gone and healed. It defiantely wasnt like this before, but I dont make a huge habit of checking that his tongue's still in one piece so I don't know for certain how long its been like this.

Somebody please tell me it's possible he's done this himself through over excitement or something?? or even that it's happened over time?

and yes, i did phone my vet and he said it's perhaps just how his tongue is, but I know 100% that he had a normal tongue before!!

I'm starting to feel like the most terrible dog owner ever, even though i know I'm doing all I can bar actually wrapping him in cotton wool

No, the vet didnt mention it, either he didnt see it or it wasnt like that then, but at the time he saw three separate vets, so I can only assume it wasnt like it then else surely ONE would have noticed??

he;s fine in himself (currently lying behind me on the sofa knawing on a chew) eating and drinking fine, his normal bouncy self. I'm baffled.

If he did indeed get his head stuck in the stair gate then it is possible in the struggle he has bitten down on his tongue and taken the tip off(did you mention) he has blood on him at some stage when u found him, I have seen dogs bite the tip of the tongue off accidenatlly of course, one I was grooming who went to bite me and missed

he took a sizable bit of togue off and it bled like nothing else.

well when I found him he had blood coming from nose and mouth but vet said it's possible he swalowed blood (hence the coughing). All the vets i aw that weekend (three in total) checked his mouth, but none said anything re his tongue. His mouth had blood in it, but wasnt bleeding from IN the mouth if you see what i mean?

Poor little chap

He managed to jump IN the bath the other day and get his claw stuck in the plug hole, which has taught me a) to keep the bathroom door shut and b) to leave the plug in, just in case.

Well,it doesnt look pretty

but if it's not causing him any trouble it's probably best to leave well alone.Might even be a blessing in disguise if his tounge was too big for little chap before

Odd that the vets have missed it if they all looked in his mouth?

He might have bitten it off, but like Cayla said, and like ourselves, small wounds in fleshy areas PEE blood. It is a very clean wound - almost like it has been cauterised?!

Maybe take him to the vets again for a face-to-face opinion but if it isn't causing him too much bother and can eat OK I wouldn't worry too much.

I do worry about him, probably too much

I'm constantly stressing about not leaving him alone, honestly to the point where I've dropped any cleaning jobs I can't take him with me to because I'm scared to leave him for too long incase he has an accident (I can't afford any more accidents!)

He has a check up at the vets in 2 weeks to check his bloods etc again to make doubly sure he'll be okay for anasthetic (sp?) for his castration, so i might leave it till then and ask the vet what he thinks.

OH commented this morning that he has been known to sit with his tongue between his front teeth. there's not loads missing, just perhaps a few mm, just the rounded bit on the very end gone. Maybe he's worn it away over time (God that sounds stupid!) but am clutching at straws now trying to think how it could have happened.

To think a matter of weeks ago I was contacting breeders tryng to get another pup so he could have company

Have you thought about getting him a puppy pen or something when you go out? If he is that accident-prone, bless him!

What is his bite like? Hold his teeth, closed, together, they should be level and fit together nicely - if he has an overbite or an underbite, then perhaps that has had an effect on the tongue.

(1) Scissor Bite - Upper incisors striking just along the front face of the lower ones
(correct preferred bite)
(2) Level Bite - Incisors striking edge to edge. (acceptable)
(1) Overshot Jaw - Upper jaw much longer than lower jaw.
(2) Undershot Jaw - Lower jaw much longer than upper jaw
