A thought about Sedalin

Does anyone ever worry about the long term effects of using this drug? It would appear that many folk use it regularly for box rest and even riding.

Is there not going to be an effect on the horse eventually that is not one you would like? ie liver/ kidneys etc?

Just a thought.

PS I have never used it, saw how a friends horse reacted to it many years ago, so would never want to have it use on any of my lot.

I really don't know. Will be interested to see what people can find out though. I tend to find that it is handed out very easily and seems to be a first port of call rather than a last resort.

One of my ponies also reacted badly to it, and I see people all the time just adminestering it all over the place for all types of minor things that a bit of common sense or practical handling would have done just as well if not better!

My event horse is being ridden on sedalin as coming back from an injury and he is a nightmare to do walk work on, so vet advised keeping him on sedalin for as long as needed, she said there wasnt any long term effects to worry about and much better for him to be on it than risk re-injuring or dumping me in a ditch

It depends on what out weights the other.. the 'chance' and getting liver/kidney failure from prolonged use as apposed to the possibility of injury!

I *think* that horses build us resistance to it, so after a while there would be no use using it, therefore "long term use" is limited. (I'm not sure I've explained that very well, I'm a bit spaced out on co-codamol atm

)

I use it when Jesper's been stuck in for a period of time (e.g. box rest for injury or yard being icy). Do I worry? Not particularly. Vet is happy to prescribe and I'd rather my head stayed in one piece.
