Rolf Harris Animal; Hospital. Channel 5. Horse undergoing op for colic. Tapeworm found.v
Praziquantel is the only drug which kills all 3 species of horse tapeworm. Now is a good time to worm.

Thanks for the reminder. :)
Slight problem with my pony though......she might be pregnant and praziquantel is not licenced for use in pregnant mares (the drug causes gut contractions to expel any worms/worm larvae). She is having a rectal ultrasound scan today, but has just been wormed with a double dose of strongid-P to be on the safe side.

ah i was wondering about this - so am i right in thinking you cant rotate the drug you use for tapeworm if this is the only one that kills them?

Strongid P in a double dose doesnt work ? Its not praziquantal is it?

You can not give praziquantel to pregnant mares.
On my vet's advice, my pony has been wormed with a double dose of strongid-P (pyrantel embonate), which IS effective against tapeworm in double dose. :)

is it effective against all types of tapeworm though?

posie-honey - which is effective against fluke?

Praziquantel - so pramox

triclabendazole is effective too but not sure if its in any horse wormer? its in pour on wormer for cattle and sheep

fluke has been really bad up here this year - even with routine drenching the recent cattle livers were rejected for contamination - we had to get vet in to devise a new treatment programme!

Doesn't have to be Pramox, you can give Equitape on its' own to deal with tapeworm. Have heard of too many horses having reactions to Pramox to risk giving it, so always give Equitape for tapeworm and Equest for encysted redworms and bots separately.

Ditto

gads, so confused.

ok, so equitape is praziquantel also ?

can someone please tell me before my head explodes... does it matter if its praziquantel you use very autumn.spring for tape or should we be rotating this with a different ingredient, and IS there anything else (strongid P double dose??) as effective ?

Also remember most wormers treat up to 600kg. Both my horses are near 700kg (not overweight!) and I either use Equimax or buy three tubes of other wormers.

Equitape contains praziquantel. Its for tape worms only and kills all 3 types of equine tapeworms.
Strongid-P kills 2 types of tapeworm at double the standard dose. It also kills other types of horse worm eg red worm.
[The drug is pyrantel embonate I think. Please correct me if its a different drug.]

Yes, I have to buy 4 tubes for 3 horses.

And it's worth mentioning that underworming is nearly as harmful as not worming at all - you can create resistance in the worms rather than killing off the lot of them.

So I spend ages faffing around with measuring tapes, calculators and the " (Heart girth (cm) ² x body length (cm) ) all divided by 11877" formula, because I don't trust weight tapes :D

Indeed a timely reminder.

You can use Equimax (praziquantel plus ivermectin) licenced for pregnant mares too.

As far as I know none of the other praziquantel products hold the licence yet so do not use on pregnant mares.

Equitape is only praziquantel and does not treat redworms, quite a handy product if your counts are clear.

Equest Pramox is praziquantel plus moxidectin so treats tapeworm and encysted redworm, another handy product, best used in winter to treat both together.

Double dose Strongid P is pyrantel, treats the most common tapeworm.
