Hi ROG, or anyone that can help.

I have a discovery 1996 2.5 diesel automatic and normally tow a ifor with L plates on. I will be taking my test January and am a confident tower, can reverse and manoeuvre well.

I do not own a trailer and have found one I am interested in purchasing.

My question is can I tow an empty trailer home on my normal licence or do I still need my mother (pre 1997 licence) to come with me and attach L plates. The latter being a pain but will do if needed.

Just wondering.

The trailer in question is an older rice treble.

I had a Land rover and an old rice trailer (very heavy) so you would need your mother to sit with you.

1300.00kg is what trailer weighs from what I've been able to find out?

1996 disco = Gross vehicle weight, 2720 kg
Any trailer being towed on a B licence cannot have a plated MAM of more than 780 kgs
Being loaded or empty makes no difference

Thanks ROG and fidleyspromise. Will I be ok to tow the trailer and three 400kg ponies or do I need a stronger car?

Yes, once you have passed your test a Disco can pull 3.5 tonnes so 3 x 400 plus your trailer would be well inside that.

I know someone who had one of these trailers, NOT a friend, people called it the tardis. She used to put 3 dales ponies and then two smaller ponies either side of the rear facing one in front. We used to stand and watch this lot being unloaded at shows.

Obvious not right but she would probably still have been legal and the Disco handled it fine.
