A Tribute to my Pony

I've had my ponio 3 years last thursday!

Sadly though last thursday she was at the vet school, suspected arthritis in the hocks.

Turns out hocks were fine.

But both suspensories are damaged and she has arthritis in the coffin joint.

So thats basically the end of her jumping career, or any career for that matter except for light hacking. There were a few treatment options but they were all very expensive and wouldn't have been covered by insurance. Even with treatment she only had a 50% chance of returning to full work.

But she had an amazing career, taught me eveything I know really. Took me from being scared of jumping 80cm to jumping newcomers at shows and 1.35m courses at home. She hasn't once come back from a show with me without a double clear of a rossette, she was just phenomonal.; a true superstar.

So yeah, it sucks that she can't jump anymore but she was getting old, it was my last year on her and I'm actually kind of glad that she isn't going to go and jump for someone else. She doesn't owe me anything and I'm going to find the best possible home for her with someone who wants to have fun going for hacks with no pressure.

interested to know what the symptoms were for your arthritis in our mare?

as my mare is out of work at the moment (also a showjumper) with possible arthritis and she is only 13. Would be interesting to know how your vet came about the diagnosis and what the symptoms were etc.

I don't think I can really help you- the arthritis was only a secondary problem to her ligaments and wasn't really making her lame; just adding to the existing lameness if that makes any sense?

She has become stiffer on cold mornings when she used to live in at nights; she came out of her box and down to the field really slowly in the mornings, but cortaflex sorted this out, could be worth a try?

well she lives out 24/7 so she doesnt really get stiff
we are giving her the winter off whilst im at uni in the hope that it is muscular and will sort otself out etc.
shes not lame either just short behind until the vet does a flexion test on her hinds and then she goes lame pretty badly

YUp its the same with Daisy, shes sound but then lame when flexed. Could be worth having some nerve blocks taken to pinpoint the area?
