I had dogs when I was living at home but we always had rescue dogs who were older and therefore toilet trained. My OH and me are getting a rescue dog in 3 weeks but this one is a puppy and I realised that I have no idea what to do... someone please help me!!

Firstly, introduce a crate/indoor doggy cage(bit, like a babys play pen), this gives you a place to release the puppy for wee wee's, as the crate is their bed/space, they are more inclined to hold their motions when in it, you can then set times to release the puppy, i.e every few hours, after meals, after play time, carry straight to designated outside area, and when they pass a motion, near the end, give a command a praise, when in the house with you, and out of the crate, don't let them out of your site, i.e to roam from room to room, as you will not beable to break and correct a motion if the puppy is not in your sight.
The crate is also fab, for leaving the puppy unsupervised, for bed times and to prevent seperation anxiety when you begin to leave the puppy for any length of time, and it's a travel aid, when you have the puppy in the car.

A teddy sibling and heat pad, willhelp the puppy settle into the new crate/environment, and feeding in the crate, to assosiate with a positive when in it, and some stimulating puppy toys, to keep the mind active, when spending time in the crate, when they get a little older.

A smaller crate is best to start with, then increase the size as the puppy grows and trianing is successful

As Cala says, never take your eyes of them. We don't use crates, we take the puppy outside after every meal and when waking but we also whip them outside everytime it looks as though they are going to stoop. Sometimes it seems as though it's every 5 minutes but they soon get the idea of giving you a clue and trying to get to the door.

Good luck.

We've had our puppy about 4 weeks now and are pretty much there with the toilet training.

We just put paper down by the door and took her out as soon as she woke up (she would always go as soon as she woke up) and everytime she started to sniff and circle. If she had an accident we ignored it and everytime she did it outside we had full on well done, treats etc etc so she know exactly how pleased we were!!

We were told to take her out on the hour every hour but we found she would come in then wee, we got on better if we watched for the signs. We also found if it was raining or really windy she was more difficult to get to stay out there (can't really blame her for that!) but it didn't really take long to get there (about 2 weeks), just a case of watching her like a hawk and lots of praise.

Good luck with it

Thats brilliant, thank you all so much for your replies
