Yesterday I took my very nervous daughter out on a hack and she had her first canter up the field on her own on her new pony. I was so happy that she came back smiling and it didn't end in tears saying she wanted to do it again! We have been working up to this moment for some time. Due to some very bad falls and very naughty ponies she has got a terrible fear of being in open spaces so I feel as though we have made a break through! I am so happy...

Well done your daughter, and well done you too - it takes a lot of courage both for our children to try things they are worried about, but also for us as parents to let them have a go.

I remember my youngest daughter's first canter, we had been building up to it for a few weeks, I carefully chose a little hill, and then on the day, I was on my bike and had to pedal furiously, desperately trying to keep up and shout words of encouragement but was puffing so much I couldnt speak and needed oxygen at the top!

That's great - well done!

Please don't make the mistake I made when I took my youngest for her first canter. I chose a stretch where my older daughter always used to canter to the end, then turn round and walk back. So pony 'knew' and promptly cantered to the end, bucked younger daughter off, and trotted happily back to me waiting at the start.

Oh dear!
