Shoulder I'n away from the offending killer monster. If it's a definate horse eating beast I'd do it I'n advance of said monster, but if it's something that I know isn't out of the ordinary scary then I get her to face into it until I know she has registered it then bend away, but straighten her up before we have escaped the monsters grab so she learns to look at things, but I am mean!
And may I just add, I had my instructor bellow this several times across the arena to me a few weeks back... "Ride the horse, not to spook." Ignore the spooking, and turn their behaviour into something productive, and it should end up distracting them.
My riding instructor always tells me to make the horse look away from the object however when I ride my own boy out with friends they usually let their horses stand and have a look. Really think it depends on the horse and the scary object. If they are dancing around I would be steering them away!!!!
My one is a pain to hack alone as she is so nosey and wants to look at everything. It's never been malicious I'n any way and I'm quite happy for her to have a look. We had an issue with green wheelie bins a while ago so I took the opportunity whilst on a quiet lane to get her to put her nose on it and sniff. It took a while to inch towards said offending bin, but once there and it had been sniffed (luckily empty!) she could realise they actually whernt going to swallow her up and they are no longer an issue. I always grab a learning opportunity if it's safe to do so.
