Firstly, apologies if there has been a recent thread on this but I just don't have time to search on here.
Very sadly it is time to PTS my mums aged collie, she's 17 so has had a good long life but we know it's time now. The question is, do I take my dog to the vets to be present when it happens? They have been companions for the past 7 years and are together about 80% of the time. Normally my dog is a bit of a hater towards other dogs but she has a great rapport with mums collie. I've never had to make this decision before so I'm a bit clueless on what is best.
If it is best to take her should she be in the room as it happens, or just be allowed to see her after she has passed?
All comments greatfully received.

Sorry to hear of your situation :(

I'd be interested in what people think on this subject as I could be in a similar situation soon with my rottie.

I think if it were me I'd take companion dog but only let him/ her in after...

I have my dogs pts at home, afterwards I allow the other dogs to see him/her and give them a chance to sniff the body. Dogs are very accepting and Ive never had an instance where they have gone looking for the deceased dog, they just know the finality of it and accept it.

If you are having it done at the vets and you cant bring the body home take your dog but let her sit in the waiting room until your mums dog is put to sleep and then let her see the body.

Im sorry you are going through this and 17yrs old is an incredible age for your mums dog, a very sad situation.

So sorry you are having to face this. I would take your dog and perhaps leave her in the car whilst the old lady is pts, and then bring her in and see the body. There is no doubt in my mind that it does help the remaining dog if you do this. She may well still pine a bit but they do seem to accept it better. When Buffy was pts at home I left Evie out in the kennel and then let her in to see her. Buff was lying peacefully in her bed but Evie knew straight away something was different, she sniffed her a bit and then just went and lay down.:(

Thanks everyone. Took her in the car to vets with theold lady but didn't take her in. The old girl has been pretty static all day so I think mine knew what was going on. She seems ok but time will tell.
Thanks for the support.

We took Bracken when Chloe was put to sleep. My OH held him outside, I held Chloe til she was gone. Then the nurse brought B in and took his lead off and we were alone for a bit.

He sniffed her all over, licked her mouth a while, then he lay down with his head on her. We stayed like that for a few minutes, then he got up and was absolutely fine again. He never grieved for her.

I would do the same again. I really think it helped him understand.
