For those of you who remember Socks.. I sold him almost exactly a year ago, to a family not far from me, for their 15yr old daughter..

This is Socks...

I had a new farrier come to shoe for me this morning, who asked if i was the person who sold Socks to this family.. i said yes (thinking, oh god, i hope it's going well) so i ask how he is, and how the little girl is getting on with him...
He said the horse is being really good, and the girl is getting on with him great

But they had a bit of a slow start to the season, because one day, when her dad was getting him in from the field, without doing up the headcollar properly, Socks got away from him, and galloped into a cattle grid!!!

Anyhow, it turns out he is alright, obviously rather cut a bruised and it took him a while to get over it

But since then, she has been on her PC Area dressage and SJing team, and it's looking good for the eventing team for next year

When they came to try him, we were very definately told that she would be sticking to 2'6 for the first year as she was nervous at jumping... So Socks is obviously being a star, as PC Area stuff is usually alot bigger than 2'6, more like 3'6/3'9 i guess....

So very well done to her!!!!

But please don't let him go playing near any cattle grids again!!!

I have seen the aftermath of this several times. Most horses are nothing like as lucky

I had a horse who dumped mum in the forest one day (lol) and tried to run home (went to next door neighbours, duh silly horse) but he jumped the cattle grid on his own!! :s arghhh!!! good job it is a semi quiet forest road with only occasional nutters doing 60!

Phew!! One of the worst things I have ever seen was a horse down a cattle grid and it didnt get out alive

Sounds like he is doing really well!!

my old pony bolted n fright over a cattle grid- luckily she jumped it and escaped with minor cuts

Glad he is recovering well

We have a cattle grid at the end of the drive at the yard, I hate riding it past it

Henry is sensible enough to walk round carefully, but Eric is likely to launch sideways at a leaf falling off a tree. It scares me to death his legs will end up in there, although at the moment he is terrified more of the cattle grid than anything else.

Lucky Socks, and he looks fab!

I actually felt sick reading that, even though I knew it had a happy ending.

I know someone whose lurcher ran into one . . . it didn't end well. My OH now has a phobia and checks any footpaths we walk our dog on to make sure they don't have grids in the gateways.

Very glad he made a lucky escape and he's doing well otherwise. I bet they treat him like gold now!

Oh thats good MDM, I *think* I have seen Socks out and about. Is he with the Egg PC?
If he is then he is lovely, but the area comps they are referring too are only area novice ones, so equilavent to intro BE and not actually area as was back in the day!!!

Scary indeed

I had a horrid nappy chestnut a few years back. One day I had him at a xc and he was napping viciously at the start, rearing etc. I fell off, it was bl00dy sore, but got back on. However I realised I had REALLY hurt my back, he realised too, turned and bolted away from the start, straight towards a cattle grid. About two strides out I realised he wasn't stopping, stopped pulling and started kicking like sh*t instead.

Luckily he cleared it (ironic really, wouldn't jump the tiny brush fence, but easy peasy cattle grid, no worries

) but it was without a doubt my scariest moment on a horse ever. Don't think my mum was enjoying it much either at that point

They are horrible things. I now have to hack past two and I hold my breath every time, especially as I have to get off and turn round to shut deer gates.
