A vets likely to say no to flu jabbing and castrating..

Hi there,

I'm having my foal tet/flu jabbed week after next and then planning on (if he's dropped etc) to have him flu/tet and castrated 4 weeks later..

do you think the vet will be happy to say that? or can you think of any reason he may say no to doing both at same time?

You will have to check with him/her but some vets do not like to do jabs at the same time as the horse undergoes significant stress and/or when there is a risk of infection. Ask what your vet's particular protocol is.

Personally I wouldn't do both together - the immune system will be under added strain from the gelding to prevent infection and deal with the assosciated tissue inflammation caused by the surgery which means that it will be harder for his to respond sufficiently to the vaccines. I'd be inclined to give the shots then wait 2-3 weeks before gelding.

Thank you mynutmeg, after consulting with MIL I think I will do exactly what you've said. Tbh he may not be "ready" to geld this side of Xmas.. I'm just planning on the fact he "might"...

If he's been given two doses of tetanus, providing things have "dropped" there is no reason why he can't be castrated at the time of the second tetanus injection. I have had a couple of my colts done this way with no ill-effects.

My vet wanted to wait til 2 weeks after the second jab, and this datasheet about the prequenza vaccination agrees with that:

Coblover63 - i have the vet calling me in a bit so will lay the cards down but at the end of the day the poor boy will have only been of his mum all of 5 weeks and it may just be to much - i'd rather pay £40 call out again then risk him getting poorly - as would any horse owner obviously!

Or not having the flu jab young could be fatal in the event of an outbreak. I know which I'd choose.
As for the op , there are arguments for and against do tetanus vacc at the time of castration. Ideally get the vaccines sorted first then castrate if time isn't too much of an issue z

And I believe that sprinkling ground up chicken s**t on a lasagne makes my pony jump higher, but only on the first Sunday of every month.
