Archie has been with me for just over two weeks now and it is nearly 5 weeks since his last race so he is well into the transformation to all-round superstar :p. I measured him tonight and he is just a smidge under 16hh but at 4 I hope that there is some growing left to come and he'll look 2 inches taller when he fills out. Funny how I look huge on him when I looked fine on the Coloured One who was a good two inches shorter .

So far, apart from 4 days box rest after pulling a shoe half off and standing on a nail  (TBs, eh?), he's done a reasonable amount of work, though obviously keeping it short and sweet. Following a blast around some stubbles I have a fairly good idea why he's not still in racing :o and he's passed the most important Gamebird test - hack alone along the main road to a friend's house, stand in the yard whilst I partake of a pint of lager, then hack home again on a (very) long rein :D.

He's actually the nicest horse I've owned since... erm.... the Coloured One and has made many fans on the yard. His favourite hobby is eating, shortly followed by sleeping - sound familiar? I'm vaguely disappointed that he hasn't put on more weight as he has 2 humungous buckets of feed a day (would be 3 if I could get home at lunchtimes). He's currently on Alfa A Oil, A&P Weight Gain, Topspec and Equitop Myoplast (judge me as you wish but I have secured a free source for Fugly, who has improved his topline no end in the same period that I've been feeding it, so I thought it would be worth negotiating Archie in on the deal ;)). I think that I'm being a bit impatient though as for the calories he consumes he has to a) work and b) grow before he uses the surplus to put on weight.

I am considering a diet swap whereby he eats pizza and wine for a month and I eat chaff.... I think it has potential! :p

Anyway, the important bit - some pics. We had a wee jumping practice tonight for a tidgy SJing outing on Friday. This is the third time that he has ever left the ground

Starting with a tiddly one:

A bit bigger with a filler, though I'm folding as though it's 4ft

Skinny? No probs :)

And finally a proper fence :D

Knackered

Then I tried to improve Fugs' shape over a fence. First attempt: more like a racehorse than Archie

Special tricks:

Better, but still rotating over my hands

Who left that 8-pack of Fosters in the middle of the arena?

Sorry if I've bored you, but I always think that it's nice to see the 'works in progress' or the untidy bits between the comp reports. There's a tiddly bit of spaghetti with prawns and chilli left (though it might just be sauce as I suspect my husband's picked all the prawns out ) and some of the aforementioned Fosters.

Archie looks so chilled! I like him a lot... If I pay postage will you send him down to Norfolk so we can have a matching trio of bay ex-racers? We could set up some circus-type thing...! And Fugly is (as ever) gorgeous.

Love Fuggers face on the last pic! Bless him! Archie looks a dude, and seems to have the same attitude as I would like to have to life ;) Shame I can't say the same re. putting weight on... :p Look forward to more updates :) I see "he who must not be named" has been entered eventing already, and locally to me! (I am fence judging at the event and happened to notice his name when I was browsing who to look out for ;) ) Look forward to seeing him in action sometime soon :D

Hey i have just posted a little update on my new pony to !
Yours looks fab jumping lovely ! Im now going to be starting mine jumping tommora too !!
looks like he is going to be very honest ..I to have one that constantly eats and sleeps !! Three feeds a day and still hungry !!
WEll done looks FAB !!

Think Archie looks lovely, but them I am biased as love TB's (especially ex-racehorses).

Re weight gain - I've only ever had 2 ex-racehorses but unfortunately no matter what I gave them (and how much they devoured, it took 18 months - 2 years for a really noticeable difference!!) I found Top Spec and D&H Staypower muesli worked well, and with another one that wasn't in hard work (because he injured himself) A&P calm % condition. Obviously as much good haylage as I could cram into them and lush grass. I now have the opposite problem as new horse is a bit 'chunkier' than my other 2 - luckily Staypower seems to suit him too without piling on the pounds. Both your boys looking great btw.

Lolo - that could be my quickest turnover yet! Knowing what I paid for him (that reminds me, better go round with the money :o) the postage would probably about cover it and make a small profit!

KatB - yes, I had twigged HWMNBN's eventing debut as BE mistakenly sent the Day Ticket to me . It's the owner's friend riding him but hopefully he'll put his best foot forwards.

Lutaluna - isn't it a godsend having one that eats? He's honest as the day is long (thus far, anyway ;))

Soupdragon - Afla Oil and Weight Gain (and sugar beet in winter) is my staple - everything goes on it in varying proportions. Archie might get the sugar beet sooner rather than later, but after 4 days on box rest and full rations he was sane as sane can be so it looks like I can at least pile in what I want without fear of reprisals.

Sounds like a plan! Weirdly the 2nd one I had (who was a bit too horizontal normally) lost it on Alfa Oil, but loved it for my older one - even in the depths of winter had a fantastic shine to his coat and looked well covered, which was rare for him. Sugar beet always useful in winter.

Archie looks fab (& Fugly too). I love the picture of the x-pole, he looks like he's really concentrating! He looks very genuine. Good luck with the weight gain. It's taken me years to get weight on Chilli & he's always gonna look like a racehorse but he looks a different horse to the skinny, ribby TB I bought originally.

Archie is very cute indeed. SJ is obviously the theme of the month for racehorses as most people at Aintree last night were pretty shocked to see Emerald rock up for the BN!
I am afraid I now subscribe to the Sov school of jump training, which is point, kick and pretend there's an open ditch!

Befney please give me more hope than that! I've got about 3 months to get Archie fat and shiny and looking like a baby eventer .

BB - but there WAS an open ditch, honest! ;) You've yet to divulge how this fabled BS outing went anyway

next time i buy a horse i'm going to take you with me. you seem to have a knack of finding nice sensible horses at cheap prices and then they look great off minimal work :)
only thing that has transformed my TB from scrawny ex racer to rounded event pony is baileys lo cal. he's the type that blows his head on anything starchy though so have had to be careful with what i've tried him on :p

Ahhh Archie looks a really sweet type and doesn't seem one bit bother by plastic bales, farm equipment etc etc, my horse would have a fit in that arena!! Best of luck with him and i'm sure as soon as he stops growing etc he'll put the weight on! A few years ago my veteran lost more weight that i would like, i used soya oil it was fab!!

Fugs is ace, where is next for him??

Ooo where is hwmnbn competing next?? Hope the littled coloured fella does well, he's very sweet!

DB/FJ - I'm not so very clever though am I, as I keep selling them after a few months and keeping hold of the great big ill-mannered Fugly buffoon! ;)

SW - Don't forget the chickens! He get tied up next to a pen of bulls (who annoyingly can untie every knot in the book so I keep finding loose horses wandering around ) and the first time I left him I came back to find a flock of chickens taking a shortcut home under his belly!. Ours have to get used to that sort of thing pretty quick.
HWMNBN will be making an appearance at Winkburn I think and Fugs goes to Beckwithshaw on Sunday.

Ah, but I haven't found a blue and white one yet. I'll have to keep my eyes open next time!

I *think* the trick is that I don't mind what I buy. It must be over 15hh, between 4 and 7 and that's it. The rest I just go ny attitude. So I might have ended up with a cob mare rather than a TB gelding and it wouldn't have mattered. They must be 'nice people' and have an honest outlook and that's my only criteria. I know Archie will be harder to shift than the Coloured One (and not half as profitable) but I know what my costs run at and I think I can turn him into an event prospect (BYEH maybe?). Do the basics - hunter trials, hunting, mini-ODE, SJing and dressage then sell him in a few months for a non-greedy price for someone looking for an eventer to play with over the winter and bring out in the spring. Or at least I can hope..... ;)

I don't hink you read my reply MardyMare - you see the only reason that I make them (and me?) look good is that I start with angels in the first place - no stroppy mares for me, too much like work!

PM me your address and I'll pop Archie in the post :)
