A wee problem!

Hoping some of you may have experienced this and be able to offer some hints.

My 3 year old homebred will not pee in his stable, never has. It has not been an issue until recently as I had my own yard and could manage him to compensate for this. However, have just moved half way up the country and we are currently on a livery yard. The YO keeps hinting at having them in earlier but I am reluctant to as he will only pee on grass. She is being accomodating about it, but I do worry about him. He is a simple little soul, but can get bolshy in the mornings when he is desperate to get out and pee!

Things I have tried:
  • Putting wet shavings from his mums bed in his bed - didn't work
  • I tried peeing in his stable everyday for a week - grim and it didn't work

Has been suggest to put turf in his stable! But he'd only play with it. Have also tried deep beds and various types of bedding but no success. My worry is when he did have to stay in for a little longer his belly blew up and he was kicking his tummy (half thought his bladder had ruptured) but he still refused to pee until he was stood on grass then peed for what felt like hours!!

Any ideas welcome.....
 
We have a mare like this, we have to take her out for a wee, but over the last few months she's got very upset having to wee in her stable(she's in goal and it obviously affects her) her son is much the same and will hold on if his stable is clean like she does. Have you tried his own wee? Our lot seem to have their own patches, otherwise can you train him to go in a bucket? Then at least he doesn't have to go out?
 
I'd try to catch his own wee, then tip it out into his stable, so at least it 'smells of him', and it might break the cycle?
Have you tried straw? Fresh straw often makes them go?
 
I've tried all sorts of things, we've got 5, one of which wee's as soon as you get in the yard, Molly simply hates messing her stable and her son and the old gelding try and hang on to go out - not sure why, the other filly will wee right in front of you, whether she is going out of not. To us its not too much of a problem (prefer cleaning a stable with no wee!) and we keep them at home. All I know is, that if the stable doesn't have enough bed or any wet bed is left behind they seem more inclined to wee - we are on rubber mats and sawdust.


The youngster won't wee in a bucket - he's quite private, much as he waits to go out and do it in the field will put it all away as soon as you approach with a bucket!!

Hope you find a solution - We go out and wee her before we go to bed - not possible in a livery yard!
 
Could you try teaching him to go on command? If he wees as soon as he gets out, it shouldn't be too difficult. Once he gets 'into position' start whistling until he finishes then reward him, do that a few times then start whistling just before he gets into position, once you think he's got the hang of it, try whistling at him before he goes out hopefully he'll become conditioned to the sound and pee indoors instead!
