I keep my hay in a lorry container. Not sure the size but its quite big, longer than my 7.5 tonne lorry. I had a giant wasps nest in there (size of a small football). I knew my landlord had some poison that he sprays on wasp nests so I asked him to come and spray them. OH and I were unloading the last few bales of hay out of there when landlord arrived. Without warning he sprayed the nest - WITH OH AND ME still in the container!!! Cue ANGRY WASPS - Anyway we legged it and left the door open.

The question is that there were 2 bales of hay (£8.56 a bale) and three bales of feeding straw (£3 a bale) left in there when he sprayed. The nest was amongst my bales of paper bedding a the front of the container. The hay was at the back and the straw next to my bedding.

He stood by the door of the container and sprayed the nest at arms length, so it was about 4ft away from the bedding - about 5ft away from the nest. Its one of those pump up the handle sprays - one down from a backpack spray.

So the question is how far would the vapour from the spray have reached? Would you still feed that hay and straw or bin it?

Also there is a layer of straw over the whole container which I store my hay on. Would you bin the lot?

Landlord can't remember the name of the poison, nor has the bottle it came in so I can't even look it up!!! Normally I think I'd just burn it but with the price of hay and all I just thought I'd ask the question.

Oh how annoying!

I'd be tempted to use the straw as bedding. Depends if it got literally covered or just what was in the air. Probably best to chuck it to be safe I suppose!

Get rid...it is highly contaminated...sorry.
We had this problem and a guy from the council came dressed as someone from Star Wars as we had a nest in the hay in a cattle feeder and he says the range of the pesticide is considerable.

What price your horse? In both monetary terms and emotion? Is it worth loosing the horse to possible poisoning and having a vet bill,or is it better to dump the hay and bedding?
