Inky and i went to a show today ( pics in PG ) and ive been thinking about something a judge said to me. Basically he said in one of my classes that it was a tough choice between first and second but in the end he put it down to manners.. Inky got 2nd all because he had let " all hang loose!!!"

Now is this really classed as bad manners??? Id have it if the horse was acting very stallionified ( think i just made that word up

) but he wasnt. it was a hot day and think he just wanted to "air" it!!

How do you get them to put it away?? I dont really want to be tapping it with a stick as 1. i dont think i would like it if it was me and 2. i dont carry one!!

Any ideas??

EH? What has that got to do with manners?!

I have exhibited and judged dogs and would never mark down a male for being, erm, out.
There were plenty of dogs at training class with their willies out today, just one of those things!

With my dog, who is missing part of a sheath anyway (niiiicce) and who I don't show, if I want him to put it away when women and children are present, I tap him with my hand under the brisket and he retracts it. I would imagine it would be similar with a horse?
 
I havent got an answer for you. but i would be pretty annoyed if this happend to me. poor gee gee was only being relaxed by the sound of it. there are soo many "naughty" horses i have seen placed above those with very good manners. I think this was an extremly lame excuse for the judge, but obviously couldnt decide between the 2.

I was taught that if they let it out and let it hang 'softly' that was just being relaxed and not rude- but that they should not let it get hard or slap it about. :S But how you can stop them- I dont know- although when I was at the royal welsh a couple of years ago I say a handler give his stallion a tap with his cane and he put it away...
 
I understood that one reason boy horsies let it all hang out is being relaxed, i could understand if like you say he was being randy but i think it is a poor excuse. As for getting him to put it away if you dont carry a stick my only suggestion is you give it a poke with your finger!!!
 
Sounds like an excuse because she had literally no other reason for picking the other horse over yours, I would be pleased it was such a close call and definitely not try to rectify natural (relaxed) behaviour

I have stewarded for a judge that put a horse down for this.

This was some time ago (5 years ish) and local show but the reason was that boys tend to do this if they have been given acp and this horse had it down a lot! The judge suspected this was the reason for letting it all hang out.

On the otherside of this my horse on occassion does it too and has never had anything before a show

He can do it in a very long class which is not on grass and he really needs to pee. Also in very long classes if he gets bored he will also start to slap it about!

Diverting his attention will get him to stop "slapping" and making sure he has lots of bedding in the box so he will pee whilst travelling or standing also helps - some boys can be wary of splashing themselves which makes them reluctant to pee.

Yes its frustrating that you were put down for something trivial but try to ignore it and look forward to the next show. If this is at a higher level of showing and your horse is going to make a habit of it remember the judges name and avoid! However if this has not been happening on a regular basis you will probably find the next show it isn't an issue

Just one other thing - just in case - is he clean? It has been very hot and sweaty recently - they can drop quite a lot if they are dirty or are starting a bit of an infection

He sleeps in his box at some shows so plenty of bedding. I know what you mean about the peeing though. He wont pee in the field as there is limited grass and it splashes, only the field shelter which has shavings down!!

Yes very clean, much to the disgust of my husband once he saw how it was cleaned!!
