My mum has something similar to this at our livery yard:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7204500.htm

She was finding that stuff kept going missing even though there was no reason for anyone other than her and her teenage sharer to be in there. So she recently bought a padlock for it. It was kept locked, she has one key and her sharer has the other.
Unfortunately she recently discovered that someone has broken into the box by forcefully prying the lid open and subsequently breaking the bit you put the padlock through completely off. It seems that nothing has been taken but it's still understandably infuriated her.

I have previously had some of my stuff rifled through and when I mentioned to the YM nothing was done and the YM didn't seem overly bothered about it so I'm fairly confident in saying that nothing will be done about this incident either especially since nothing seems to have been taken.

So WWYD?

I'd be livid and would expect the YM to do something

Failing that I'd stick a notice on the chest saying that anyone found tampering with it or its contents will be reported to the police

I would also expect the YM to intervene. It my things to walkabout I always assume someone has borrowed and not put back, which is annoying but THIS is someone maliciously breaking your mums box to use/steal something it is clear she doesn't want them to have!

or that you wont be responsible for your actions, I hear black eyes are all the rage at the moment !

I'd be livid too. Aren't people awful.:( I don't know how the YO could really do much unless they actually caught them red handed. You can't go round accussing people without proof.. They could put a sign up saying thieves are in operation on this yard, and if caught, they will be thrown off the yard without notice. If the thief knows they are suspected it may stop them..

Keep as much stuff as poss at home, and buy something more substantial? Lots of people suggest old chest freezers or fridges laid down. We use Robinson's metal tack lockers - an investment, but could be moved to future yards..

I would get a fake camera and put up a 'CCTV in use' sign or something like that right next to it and leave a note saying 'I know who you are, I'm reporting you to the police' or something along those lines...

It was really strange that it was broken into in the first place as there isn't really much of anything worth stealing in the box: Grooming kit, mum's hat, a rug, a furniture bag she uses to drag straw to her stable in and a couple of headcollars.
I quite often have small stuff "borrowed" that never seems to un-borrow itself and nothing is ever done about it. It's very very annoying!

Ha ha! Love it! :D

I know there isn't much to be done unless they are caught at it (anyone feel like a stake out at my yard? :p) but you'd think the YM would at least feign interest/sympathy :(

Don't keep anything at the yard except food, tools and rugs currently being used.

she's decided not to buy anything new till we move since her brand new headcollar went missing on the day she bought it and she tends to keep the bare minimum at the yard now. It's only because her sharer does the majority of days that she doesn't just take all of her stuff home and only take up what's needed as and when.
Can't even keep food there unless it's decanted into teeny boxes - like a couple of days worth at a time - because even that goes missing

I'd take everything home and perhaps leave one bag with some rotten fish in it? a nice suprise for whoever has been taking things :)

If the items taken were of any value well more than £5 I would be pretty upset and talking to YO

You can get a padlock that has an alarm as part of it. Well worth getting.

You can get posters from your local police station that warns people they are being watched again worth getting not just for the yard but on the gates of fields.

The YO/YM should take notice and do something about it.

I'd be looking into getting a sturdier box or some sort that you can keep stuff in - maybe look into a glavanised steel type feed bin?

Put a note in the box on top of everything saying 'smile your on camera' and either actually have a camera or something that will make a flash. Failing that get one of those personal alarms that make noise when pulled apart attach to the lid and the box.

They'd had a shock next time they opened the box :-)

Sorry happy hacker did not see your post suggesting it

I'd be absolutely livid. Seething in fact. Sorry but I don't think YO can just wash their hands of this. Why should your mum have to spend anymore or start taking things home because some twonk can't keep their grubby little mits to themselves?

Do you have any suspicians of who the culprit may be?

If so I'd be asking other liveries at the same yard if they are experiencing any problems. If they are I'd be going en-mass to the YO demanding they do something about it.

Totally unacceptable and stressful situation for your mum to be in, needs sorting quickly before it escalates.
