This may be long. Will try and avoid waffling for once!

I'm just feeling a bit demoralised and frustrated with my Lacey pony. Some of you may know her history.

I've had her 6/7 years now and been to hell and back. She is very excitable and fizzy and as a teenager I adored her. 6 months after I got her we started to have serious problems, eventually we traced it to an old back injury causing her neck muscles to go in spasms. Over the course of a couple of years she went from a fab SJ pony who would win EVERYTHING to literially rearing vertically continuously as soon as someone got on her.

During these 2 years we had her checked numerous times ect and no one found the cause. Eventually someone did and she had 3 treatments under sedation (she was impossible to treat without) then sent for reschooling. It's still taken a few years but she's pretty good now.

99% of the time she is perfectly well behaved. She's still feisty, strong and fizzy but rarely rears. She schools nicely, hacks great and jumps well.

BUT I feel stuck with her.

Basically a couple of years ago i acquired the most lovely horse who i compete BE. Getting him chained my life - horses were fun again! I quit my plans to go to uni, worked on an event yard as a WP for a while, and now am a freelance rider. I had a couple of horses to compete unaff and is all going well.

Unfortunately my super horse is 15 this year, and while I know that's not old, I am aware he is ageing. Also i want to take my eventing further and hopefully get some rides BE at one point. But i need to prove myself. And unfortunately competing novice be on a 15 year old is not going to prove anything.

What I really want is a nice young horse to produce to compete BE. Partly as doing well on a horse I've produced is what I need if I want to get a ride on another horse, but also so i have a horse to go onto when Squirrel needs to take it easier, and just it would be great.

But I really havn't got time for another in work. I can afford it at a push but time is the issue.

Lacey is a nice pony, but really, best case scenario she may eventually go back to unaff comps. This needs work but i think she could get there.

I just feel I'm working and working at this, but even best case scenario she isn't going to be what i want. She could do BE100 I think, but she would struggle to go higher, and that's even provided she became consistent enough for us to risk spending the money to affiliate her.

So what do I do? Do i just accept that until one of them needs retiring, i need to be patient? Is she loanable? I couldn't sell her as I fear with the wrong handling she could go back the way she was, and I want control over her future.

Sorry i know this is a very selfish moan really, I'm very lucky to have both of them and I do love her dearly...but i do wonder if she is better off in a home where no one wants her to compete. Like i said, i think she could go back to it, but she can be a stress head and des find competing stressful so I'm not really sure it's in her best interests....but i find is hard to ride and school a horse of mine with no competitive goal.

Any ideas? Please don't be mean lol i do love her very much.

Why don't you put her on Project Horses for a long time loan. Take your time to find a lovely home for her and once you have you can then look to getting your next horse.

Why don't you loan your boy? Sounds like just the sort of horse to bring on an inexperienced rider in eventing/riding club comps. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the problem pony as you could still keep her and bring on a youngster.

I'm still getting a lot out of him so that's absolute no go. He's v. Talented and not showing any signs of needing to it easy yet. And I really enjoy him, and can pursue what I want to do with him, whereas no matter how much work i put into ponio I won't.

Thanks i put her on project horses before and had zero interest but I don't know if I made her sound worse than she is? As most of the time she really is good, if you're confident and like a fizzy pony, but there's always the chance, you know?

She doesn't sound a problem pony, just fizzy. How big is she? Would she be happy with a competent teenager? Maybe try the PC website.

Could you live with yourself if she went away under any circumstance, loan, sale, share, and went verticle and hurt someone?

I would advertise her for long term loan. Really vet the home. Make sure they know her history but stress that that she is mostly well behaved just a fizzy pony so needs a competant rider.

I certainly remember Sunbeam Lacey :) and Willow. I am pleased to hear Lacey's anatomical issues have been diagnosed and she has progressed and that you are following your eventing dream.

Finding a loan home will take time; she certainly is a talented pony and in your advert you should specify her talents and that the same time she requires an experienced and understanding rider.

Have you tried advertising her on the Intelligent Horsemanship site as well as Project Horses again.

There is someone out there you and they just haven't had the chance to meet up yet.

I would have considered her but last year my heart ruled my head and I ended up with a new edition an ex polo pony and I have enough equines at the moment.

You could try your local pony club ?

She'll be 11 this year I think (or 12, not certain).

She's a touch under 15hh, was LHC at 14.3 and a quarterhh. Welsh x hackney btw and STUNNING. Used to manage all horse distances fine and she takes a fair bit of leg (I'm 5 foot 8 and look ok on her)

I think her ideal home would be a confident, competent teenager/young adult who will see the fun side of the fizz. BUT the problem, IMO, for pc type people is She isn't really suitable to compete. not as she is, I think we're taking a good 18 months of work for her to be happy and not stressing about shows.

My plan for her would be to do loading practise first (she is ok to load once you aim her at itut gets stressed and bolshy), then take her out in the lorry for hacking and school hire, then lots of clear round then FINALLY a proper comp.

So def couldn't Market her as a comp pony as she is, and I don't think she'd suit a very competitive home anyway as she stresses.

Singingdawg - that is exactly what concerns me. But then again she rarely rears now and when she does they are tiny. But it's definitely a huge concern hence the questions lol. It's such a rare event for her to rear now it seems unfair to write her off, especially as it never happens in her day to day life of hacking and schooling ect.

I havn't tried the intelligent horsemanship web, I will if I do pursue this, that's howshe was retrained and it's the only 'way' for her. Getting cross only leads to more stress and then she fights.

Thanks everyone, this is really hard but I do think she may be better off in a home where she is kept for fun, you know? She always has to come second to my eventer and I hate that, she is such a lovely pony really.

How about looking for an experienced sharer so you can keep a very close eye? Or retire her and put her out to grass, she's likely to be perfectly happy living out her life in a field with friends :)

From what you've told me about her I don't think she would be suitable for our PC but maybe some of the other ones round us? Or how about an adult that wants to do something like endurance rather than competing in an arena etc. If you want to hack out with me and Raff just let me know. As you know he's pretty bomb proof and will go first or second. x
