as Pidge was lame and had been diagnosed with Hock Spavin, 2 years to the day of having had to had Higgs PTS with grass sickness (someone up there has a sick sense of humour

)
So decided to get the vet out yesterday to check Pidge over and see how he is doing. He has a slight effusion on his hock which is apparantley to be expected and he does bring his hind legs in a little when moving but no worse than last year

And the best thing was my vet said he looks like a totally different horse to last year as he is so fit and well

and that whatever I am doing to keep doing it

I am so pleased as this time last year I scared myself silly reading up on hock spavin and had a lot of support and kicks up the backside from people on here, both of which were very much needed and appreciated

So just to say thank you so much everyone for your help and support over what has been a difficult time and just to show you that there can be life after hock spavin here is Pidge thoroughly enjoying what he loves best - jumping

Speaking as the owner of a spavined horse (who was sooo lame this time last year I advertised him for loan as a hack) and who last night was popping 1.05 with me and hunted last winter, I can wholeheartedly agree that arthritis of the hock is not an immediate death sentence!

He certainly looks very well now.
My horse has recently come back from a long, frustrating problem and the one positive thing I would say is that it made me appreciate him even more than I did before - everyday still seems like christmas at the moment!
I hope you and Pidge carry on enjoying yourself for many years to come.

what a lovely uplifting post and of course Pidge is absolutely gorgeous (well he would be as he's chestnut with a blaze!) - onwards and upwards.

What a lovely happy post.

He's the one HHO horse I would like to have in my stable. Love him to bits, such a class act.

I know so much how you feel!

My mare had severe arthritus in her hocks, (hock spavin? Not sure) but it went 1 step further. She had a treatment and her whole hock collapsed! They thought she'd have to be put down or at most be a companion...But 20 months on, and here she is.

Going better than ever before

Aww he certainly does look very fit and very happy and healthy! I can't believe it has been a whole year! I remember us talking about our lame horses like it was yesterday (what a cliche... but I do!) I think it was 15th May that Maiden was diagnosed with her torn tendon - I am determined she will be back in walking work soon though

It certainly has been inspirational hearing of your highs and lows and the highs getting better and better (and I see your signature hasn't changed in a long while, it still says "Woohoo got the go ahead to jump Pidge again"!!) I hope you and Pidge continue on your well-deserved "up"!

Yep I had a pony years ago who had spavin but he was fab (if a little mental speed wise) and, although he had height limitations jumping he loved his x-countryand jumping to the end.

thanks you so much everyone for the lovely comments. To me this is what HHO is all about, the wealth of knowledge, experience and support amongst everyone (well most anyway

). I know I for one have been overwhelmed by the support and advice from people on here, it is so very much appreciated
grin.gif

I hope that those whose horses have been through the same continue to enjoy their health and enjoy life doing what horses should be doing - having fun with their mum or dad

and to those that want to nick Pidge, "hands off he's mine all mine" even when I have a low (and there have been a few recently
blush.gif
) at the end of the day I feel like we've been through too much to ever seriously consider getting rid of him
