Basically, had the saddle fitter out 2 weeks ago, as the back of my ponies saddle is going up and down in trot & when jumping ect :/ was worried so saddle fitter came out and said saddle IS A GOOD FIT!!!!!!!? she put some flocking in the front and told me to ride without a saddle pad - just the saddle on its own for a couple of days. I did this and the saddle is still doing it! :( But the saddle fitter said a bit of movement is normal? and also, that the showjumpers only wear half pads to cover their saddles moving up and down at the back - wich is what i got told to do. I'm really rather worried now that it could be damaging her back :/ so not using it atm until i know its okay. This is a very well reccomended saddle fitter aswell :S

I have been told by different people to use a front riser pad or a back riser pad? would any of them help? Please can someone help? Thankyou!! :) xxx

My saddles are from balance international. They all fit fab. If you go to their website there is a lot more info. Hope you get sorted. :):)

your saddle should not move up and down at the back, it will cause bruising. Put your saddle on, girth it up tight and then put your hand on the pommel and see if you can press it down. if you can press it down and the back lifts then the saddle is either too wide or it has a banana shaped tree. Either way it is not a good fit and will be causeing damage. I am extremely concerned when a saddler starts talking crap about pads. i use half pads under my saddles as they are all half panel saddles and i don;t need numnahs or saddle cloths. My saddles are all fitted to my sheepskin half pads, and if that is what you want to use under your saddle then your saddle should be fitted with one of those on the horse. they are not there to mask the movement of a badly fitting saddle. a front or rear riser will not stop your problem if it doesn;t fit - and can cause you serious long term issues.

In my opinion your saddler has done neither you nor your pony any favours and i would be insisting they came out again and fitted the saddle correctly with your half pads, as to the movement there should be non really, you will lokk to have a tiny amount as teh horse moves up and down but it should not leave the horses back, just move with the horses movement.

If you can put a photo up, with the horse tacked up with saddle, and no pads under, girthed up, then I can see how the fit is and see if there is any more help i can give.

Bosworth is right and I would change your saddle fitter PDQ.

Again any photos will help in the meantime have a look at this:

as we are responsible for the comfort of our horses we should be aware of basic saddle fitting. A saddle can cause long term damage in very subtle ways - we need to be aware.
