My Cushings horse has just recovered from Laminitis & i now suspect she has Arthritis in her knee or fetlock!!!! It seems everything is against me at the moment! Not ridden her since end of April, and its started to get me down now!!! Hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. I dont want her to retire yet

Has any one else come across arthritis after Laminitis? or is it just coincidence????
Also what do you guys recommend for a suppliment for arthritis?
Thank you x

you would probably find it has more to do with the cushings than the lami. And im suspecting the lami had to do with the cushings as a factor?

Horses feet generally grow a lot faster when they have cushings and this can cause strain resulting in artiritis.

Glucosamine is the standard supplement for this condition, A good veteran mix will contain Glucosamine and also MSM which is an other excellent supplement for this condition.

How old is your horse?

yes but the other way round, my mare is arthritic and she got laminitis 6 weeks ago for the first time, i'm just weaning her off bute now but when she's off it she'll go onto equine america buteless and the other thing i've found good is dodson+horrell mobility herbs xxxx

How I sympathise with you

What treatment is your horse on for the Arthritis, if any ..... if she is not on bute, would this help with her Arthritis, so that you could do a little bit with her. As I would imagine that some work will be better than none?

And Nailed I HATE it being called 'Lami' Grrrrrrh

Yes the Laminitis was induced by cushings, of which she is on Pergolide for. She is 20 this year.
Just been and bought Equine America Glucosamine & MSM suppliment & a Horselyx field Mobility lick for the field.

She is not on any treatment at the mo, as I have only just suspected she has it. Due to her being lame from the Lami (sorry Laminitis!!!

) id not really noticed she was stiff in the one leg until now.
She is not on bute, but I did give her some Devils Claw last nite & she flew out of her stable this morning! Dont suppose it helps as she has been out of work for a while, so I need to build up her muscles again!

I presume she has been on box rest for a while, so it may not seem so bad when you have got her out and about ...

When my boy came out of his 5 months of box rest, following Cushings induced Laminitis (

) I started to walk him out in hand as much as possible and then gradually increased the time being led until I eventually got back on him ... tho tbo he came out of his box rest looking very good .... 3 years on he is now looking his age and like a old pony

- but he is now 27

Fingers crossed that she will 'loosen' up and you will get her back working again

no answe.. thats a bit rude really..

Sound like shes a little stiff from lack of momement, her body is under alot of strain. Both those supplement will help greatly as will the lick, just watch intake as they are usually molasses based!

if you can it may be an idea to get her back into some light walk work and Devils claw is a good supstitue for bute so it sounds like your going about it the right way..

Good luck!

no answe.. thats a bit rude really.. (what is this all about???)

anyhow thanks guys for all your help, looks like im heading in the right direction!

Some people just don't - they have watched their horses struggle with this dreadful condition and feel that abbreviating the term makes light of a disease which causes them and their horse much pain. That's all. Eaglestone is not at all rude and perhaps has gone out to tend to Motor. He's not too bright atm.......

Not sure how important this is in your case but I have read reports recently that glusosomine is not necessarily the best choice where cushings is involved. I think I saw some threads about it recently on the metabolic horse site at yahoo. May be worth a look.

3 months box rest for a tendon injury vastly worsened my mare's arthritis I'm afraid. I recommend magnetic boots/wraps, glucosamine and ButeX from Global Herbs. My mare went from stumbling and falling onto her knees, so unrideable, to being able to be cantered around a field again in a week. Introduce it slowly though as it is very pungent - think Catholic Mass and you'll know what I mean! But it really is worth it for the fantastic results. Incidentally, the magnetic boots will really help with the laminitis too, and my friends Cushings pony has no problems from using them, so don't worry about that.

I have dealt with some severe cases of lami, i've trimmed horses and seen the pedal bone making an imprint on the sole.. I dont think calling it lami is making 'Light' of this horrendous condition.. And i have not mention her beign away, as this is possible.. but she reply after i asked her to explain her comment and got no reply to my question so your comments are not valid!

I was just coming on to say that glucosamine is not always a wise choice of supplement for a horse with metabolic syndrome or cushings, but EllieP got there first and said it....... I certainly believe it had a detrimental effect on Domino.
