Aaargghhh - new horse and im scared!! HELP!

Getting potential new horse vetted on Tuesday, hes really nice, ive ridden him on a few occassions and he hasnt put a foot wrong.

I soooo worried about buying him - nothing personal on the horse -

i keep thinking what if this happens and what if that happens.

I forgot how stressful buying a horse is - im getting a new one as my ex racer has had to be retired due to kissing spine.

Ive gone for a big hairy cob who is gorgeous - but i keep worrying - anybody the same when getting a new horse???

Hes 16.2 and very bigggg compared to my TB and i suppose im scared of him tanking cos even at 6ft 1 i dont think id have a chance. Hes sooo nice nd i keep worrying!!!
 
I know exactly how you feel - I am in the process of finding a new horse and I am afraid of all the 'what-ifs' - at least with my boy I know him inside out now - its the fear of the unknown - I keep telling myself to keep a positive mental attitude and visualise things as I want them to be - makes me feel better anyway!

I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about, but to give you some confidence, spend a bit of time on the ground with him and lunging first, or maybe start off riding somewhere enclosed.
 
Hi, Its a big step buying a horse. So naturally you may worry that it all works out. If you get him, let him settle in and work with him in the stable and on the ground at first. Get to know each other a little before riding him. Do everything at your pace and don't rush. I'm sure everything will be ok and his size will not be an issue once you get to know him. Good Luck!
 
We've just been there and done that! (we've had our new boy 5 weeks now)

We did all the what ifs etc (we'd had a long and heart breaking time with our previous horse who was eventually PTS due to multiple foot realted problems, so we were understandably paranoid) but we came to the conclusion that there was no point in worrying beacuse what will be will be and we'd done all we could to ensure everything went as smoothly as possible and he really was the horse for us (he is!).

Assuming your potential new boy passes the vet and you buy him then just make don't put any pressure on yourselves and allow plenty of time for him to settle in and for you to get to know each other in a relaxed manner. If you keep worrying and get uptight then its more likley that things will go pear shaped ridden wise.

I know how you feel!

I've had my horse 2 weeks and i was scared the first week, but now we have got our routine and I've spent lots of time with him. I've been hacking him out everyday (with company) and now feel more positve.

but it will take sometime before I'm cantering about and thinking of doing some shows and fun stuff. but looking forward to the summer months with him.

it just takes time to get to know a new horse.
 
I know how you feel but worrying is the worst possible thing to do. He will pick up on it and probably try to take advantage. Make sure you build up a good bond with him. Start by riding him in a school or fenced off area and then hacking with a companion if possible. Don't try to jump in at the deep end if you don't feel comfortable.

Considering i bought my ex racehorse when i was a beginner - he ended up being the best horse ever (however he could never be cantered on a hack cos it would be straight to gallop hehe).

I think the trouble is i dont want a new horse - i still want to be able to ride him - we had trust in each other.

But, its not meant to be so im just going to have to do some positive thinking!!!! I will let you all know how the vet goes (thats another thing to worry about!!!)

I had to retire my 13yo TB due to arthritis so I made the decision to buy another horse. It was so difficult getting used to him and I felt so safe on my other horse (even though he is a nutter at times

) I felt guilty for spending time with new horse, thing was my other horse couldn't care less. I have now realised that my retired chap is quite happy and I am now enjoying my time with my new horse and building quite a bond

When I eventually got George, my first horse after 30 yrs of dreaming, it really was my childhood dream come true, but I really was terrified too - he was sooo big (16.3) and I was frightened we just wouldn't gel, but nearly a year on he really is my dream come true!
