So i like most horsey people have no money. However having just acquired a promising baby horse i will not let the small matter of no money stop me buying a good fitting saddle so as to preserve my horses back for the future and allow me to do a bit of eventing.

I told my boyfriend that saddler was coming out today, didn't harp on too much about it so that i could avoid the 'you don't have any money because of the horse' rant, but he was well aware that she was coming.

Saddler is a friend, knows my shape and knows what i like etc so just so happens she has a secondhand ideal jumping saddle which i love and fits the horse. So she agrees that i can pay in instalments and the deal is done.

I text boyfriend and tell him i got a good deal and that luckily my dressage saddle fits. Boyfriend gets really angry and says he wanted to buy me a saddle for Christmas (he was going to tell me on Christmas day and arrange for fitter to come out in January).

So he's being a complete git about it now. He's saying that he wanted to buy me one because he knows that i really need one but can't afford one but he will not put any money towards this one out of principle as if i had been patient he would've bought me one!

But i told him the fitter was coming and how was i supposed to know he would buy one??!! And to add insult to injury he also hinted that he would now get rubbish presents from me at Christmas as i really have no money!!

Raaaaa, so annoyed! I didn't want him to buy me a saddle but don't need him rubbing it in that i have no money. Please tell me other people spend way too much on their horses??

Oh god yes,BUT........my hubby dosnt know what i spend!!!

i spend 6 months talking my husband into buying my then 25 year old 12.2 pony a brand new gp saddle under the tact it would be so much better for him. 3 months after purchase and with saddle just having its final fitting i lost his rider. £450. later and with lovely eng leather saddle the pony was retired. saddle now sits in tack room in fab condition and no one wants it.i then spent £200. on new rugs for retired pony so he didnt get cold in retirement. husband not amused !!!!!! i didnt get xmas pressie that year!! doubt if i will get one this year either.

Grr, they are so silly. Now he's upset, i'm upset, no longer excited about saddle and thinking christmas day will have a saddle shaped hole in it. I understand i ruined his suprise but really there's no need to be so angry about it!!

ummm, it sounds as if he's being really unreasonable tbh. i'd tactfully mention something else you might like instead... like your registrations for BE for next year, or a few entry fees, or something...

if he goes up the wall, ditch him.

Oh I love the whole boyfriend/horse/money situation!! My husband flatly refuses to buy me anything for the horse for my birthday or Christmas presents - he says he wants to buy ME something rather than the horse, but doesn't see that I will spend my money on these things anyway so they would be much more gratefully received than anything else he can think of. And then he moans that he doesn't know what to buy me!!!
