I wanted to get your advice i am on DIY livery and pay £150 a month and this includes hay/hage which is pretty good really and the quality is good. My mare has asthma and can have really bad attacks if she is fed hay. She is on box rest at the moment so i need to make sure she has good quality hage. I get to the yard at 5 am and not back until 7pm so i hardly ever see anyone and he never answers his phone so if i need anything i have to post notes through the tack room door!! There was no hage on Monday night so i soaked a haynet as i knew i would be there on Tuesday for the vet saw him on Tuesday and said can he bring some round explained about her breathing and said how important it is he said he would, gets to 4ish and he dissapears off home no hage or muck trailer empited i would just go and take it but the barn is locked up so again had to use soaked hay and thought he must do it Wednesday yesterday got there at 7 and nothing my mare is getting heavy breathing so have to put her on my tub of Ventipulmin that i keep for emergencies which is really expensive and then i have to walk up the fields for 10 mins through mud on my own to get to the field where horses are living out to take some of the hage he has put up there!!!
I'm so angry as the hage is there i just think everyone is using it a bit to quickly so he is trying to save some and make people use hay.
I want to take money off my livery to buy more ventipulmin as if it wasn't for him being so lazy i wouldn't have to use it.....
sorry for my rant but what would you do?x

Buy in a few small bales of haylage to split between the liveries every time the YM fails to provide you with some. Every time you have to use a bale, bill the yard for it?

asthma or COPD/RAO

My horse has COPD/RAO and doesn't go on boxrest unless something where she really doesn't have to move which luckily hasn't happend so far.........what is your mare on boxrest for??????

Get the hell out of there, lazy sod of a yard manager does not deserve a yard.

I agree with chesnut mare, my horse has asthma and although he has a dose of mud fever at the mo and is stabled 24/7, he doesnt stay in.

that's a good idea about billing the yard and when i go to the feed shop on sat i will buy some to keep spare i cant get there before weekends as i have to get a train to work and that takes an hour!!

She has asthma and can get very sudden attacks that once lead to colic! She has to be on box rest as she has done something to her foot/leg and can only just walk the vet is coming to x-ray her this afternoon hopefully after that she can go back out even for a few hours.

she really shouldn't be on box rest unless its very bad ie, she cant walk or has had an operation.
What has your vet said about it?
When my girl went lame the vet said "2 weeks box rest" pretty much what they say to every lameness in the first stage. When he told me this I reminded him she had COPD and he said she's better off out then. Although she doesn't ever tear round the field just grazes.....whats yours like in the field...?

That's the thing she will run around the field being a complete idiot and wont be caught i only ever keep her in if i really really have to and even tried turning her out in a pony paddock why i mucked out it's tiny but she managed to run round it and made it into a mud bath in 5 mins i wasn't very popular!!
The vet said we do need her in at least until we x-ray and she loves being in her stable she hates going out and i haven't had any problems for at least 8 months as i know how to control it and what the signs are i get upset because i know what can happen and we both dont need this on top of her being lame. Apart from no hage the yard is great keep myself to myself and only 5 mins from my house.

I am sorry
I didn't mean to be a winge....
Totally fair enough I can see your dilema my horse wouldn't be going out either if she was hooning around, sorry to accuse.
Good luck with the xrays

oh god dont worry your not a winge it's hard when you dont know all the details. She is a bit simple bless her and doesn't seem to understand when i say please dont run around your costing mummy more money as that leg is not insured!! Hopefully the vet will say 'being out in the field will be the best thing for her' then we will all be happy and i dont have to much out twice a day!!!
Thanks for your help.x

I have a mare that can struggle with hay so I always have a couple of small bales of Horsehage tucked away in case of emergencies, unlike yours though my YO is very good and ensures I have a ready supply of whatever I need.

If being difficult to reach is a regular problem as well as the yard being without the trailer being emptied then I would be moving asap; keeping horses is time consuming and expensive enough without obstacles being put in your way.

I'd buy your own haylage and small bits for emergencies and when he leaves none out for you...use your emergencie stash and either bill him for it or deduct it from next months rent.

I do not think many YOs would take too kindly of you making deductions on your livery bill. Be prepared for some ultimatums. Hopefully a vacancy will come up soon on the new yard.
