Thanks

My old mare had lice a good few years back, I thought she had some kind of skin disease as, I could have died when the vet said it was lice! any way he said that old horses can be more prone to them? She has never had them since & the strange thing was that the youngster I had turned out with her didn't seem to have them, (I treated her any way) they are like nits at school if one child has them they all have them normally, That winter I rented a field next door, so I can only assume that she picked then up in there?? Lice sound horrid but there nothing to worry about, give it a week or 2 & things will be back to normal!

ok thanks charlie, I was thinking of giving her a full clip as she is very fuffy and as its not to cold I thought this may help as they wont have anything to cling to??

Lice spread very easily and are a pain to get rid off! My mare used to get them (from another horse in the yard) and I used the powder and that didnt do anything for her!! Kept her feet trimmed and I highly recommend Benzol Benzolate.. you can get it from the Chemist!! Be sure to say what you want it for as they might look at you strange.. its for the treatment of human crabs! It works wonders!!!

That's a good idea to clip, it will make you & your horse feel better! don't be horrified if you find a few bald patches! its only cosmetic & the hair will come back.

I would treat any horses that are or have been in contact with other animals that have or have had lice! they can even pick them up off head collars, bedding, brushes, ect. As far as I know humans don't get them?? As I said my old mare had lice but we treated her field mate & my other horse & the pony who were in fields surrounding. its best to have a de - lice day do every one and every thing!

As I said yesterday, all horses that have been in contact must be treated, also rugs and any shared grooming kit. You would be best leaving ungroomed for as long as possible and will need to re-apply the powder in two weeks time
