Daniel is schooling really well for a baby but he hangs on the right rein, this was the side he sharpe tooth was on so it may be all in his head! I try dropping the rein or hold my hand up but neither works really. I work him for about 30 mins and then he starts to relax into his work a little. I was wondering if a abbot davies balancing rein would help him gain more balance! or has anyone got any advice??

If anyone has an abbot davies I could buy I would be really grateful

If he is a baby horse personally I would give him time rather than gadgets. Assuming you have had all the usual things such as teeth, back, saddle checked, if so then do you have lessons at all, a good trainer should be able to assess the stage of training of both you and your horse and help you formulate a training plan to suit.

yes he is just 5 years old, andalusian. He has had his teeth done and his wolftooth taken out. His back has been checked and I had the saddle made from him and me from scratch. My trainer, who is an angel has to also work on him for some time before he settles into work. I am happy taking my time I just wondered if I could do anything else to help him really

My horse had a similar problem when I got him, I've found that when schooling, once he's warmed up if you work on getting him to flex, especially to the right side, both on straight lines, circles, leg yields, shoulder in etc, and then once he is flexing really well to the right, give the right rein away but keep hold of the left, so he learns that he can't lean on the right rein but the left rein is there too if he needs it! Do this a lot in all paces (though obviously be careful he is balanced enough especially in canter), and he will gradually learn to carry himself, soften and not leanon the right hand.

I think introducing a gadget he can lean on is not a good idea at all.

How about trying inside & outside flexion the moment he leans, so you're releasing the neck.

Will be interested to hear responses. I have a 5 yr old but is more like 4 with his schooling. He's jumped BSJA but had no schooling on the flat at all. I've a fair bit to undo first but he hangs terribly on the right. Have physio checking him tomorrow, dentist in a couple of weeks and saddler asap. However, I started lunging in a pessoa last night and when I got on tonight there was an instant difference. I'm not too keen on using gadgets but I think pessoa for a youngster is great. Would be interested to hear what you thought of Abbot Davies if you try it.
