Hi all,

I picked my older horse up from the vets a couple of weeks ago. Without going into loads of detail I’ve not been impressed with the care she received but this vets was loaners choice. She’s ended up underweight (understandable I guess due to stress) but has also ended up with reoccurring neck abscesses as a result of a cannula which she had in for a week. I did query this but was told not to worry. She did not go in with any of these issues and went in for wound management.

It resulted in a longer vet stay and about 3 neck abscesses and the vein on the left side is now pretty much not functioning. After the last abcess I did ask for her to have ten days stability before discharge which they really queried me on.

She came home two weeks ago today and has already put weight on. A week ago the livery yard (she’s on retirement grass livery) noticed some swelling at top of the neck. I sent photos to equine hospital and they said not to worry it’s probably not draining properly take temp and monitor. A week later and an abcess has formed no temp but one night was slightly less interested in food. Spoke to hospital they said to get a vet out who came today and confirmed it’s an abcess. They have given pain relief and some topical treatment to see if it softens and it then might need draining.

My query is where do I stand? She’s insured but this will be pre-existing in their eyes as I insured her to come home but loaner has very kindly covered hospital fees and she wasn’t insured while with them. I am feeling like these issues are due to negligence with the hospital although they have said these things happen. I can’t ask loaner to pay bill as feel they have done more than enough. Would you go back to vet hospital (I’m thinking of putting a complain in any case due to other issues) or just suck it up?!

New vets are coming back on Monday to assess if it needs draining/take a sample and I’m just hoping she is feeling better soon.

Thanks for any help.

I can't help you on where you stand but I will give you my experience.
I had a pony microchipped and in retrospect some skin or dirt must have entered the neck with the chip because an abscess formed which exited at the crest. She had antibiotics and it cleared up only to recur a few months later. This went on a further two times until the vet decided to operate, remove the abscessed area and the fistula which had formed. She had an area about 1 x 6 inches cut out which over time healed to leave a 6" vertical scar and she had no further trouble. It did cost me a fair bit I could have done without paying though they gave me a reduction of the fee for the op.

thank you I’m concerned she might need something more invasive too as this is the fourth one in and around the neck. She is 26 so hoping it doesn’t come to that

I hope you get a good conclusion. Mine was only rising 3 when she had the op. Except for the scar she never had a problem with it after that.
