Aswell as poulticing the vet said to free school him for 30 mins in the school everyday to get what ever it is in his foot to move more so it should come out quicker...has anyone heard of/done this before?

Also has anyone tried compacting a soap and sugar mix to try and draw it out aswell? Did it work very well?

bran polticing works well.
Also when a horse has a foot abcess it is mandatory for the horse to move or it will take a long time to draw. Loose schooling would work well.
Walking out in hand for a long time works too.

God, its been ages since I heard of the soap and sugar cure. My Mum swore by it and liberally plastered our scabby, grit filled knees with it.She always had a gunkie block of Sunlight soap marinading in sludgy looking water ready to be used. Needless to say, it was used often. It definately works, I can guarantee. Youve got to use granulated sugar, castors no use! M.

My Mum swears by it too, I'd give it a go. Needless to say though, the time I got slate stuck in my chin, it didn't work as needed an operation in hospital to get it out in the end, she was determined though!

Turn it out - the abcess will come to the fore much quicker with daily exercise. A little bute will help make the horse more comfortable - and the lovely mud will act as a natural poltice.

See I've been told not to turn him out. He's to stand in a bucket of warm, salty water for 15mins every two hours, go in the school and walk and trot around for 30mins twice a day. His stable is big 15x18 and he's only 15.3hh and a short coupled whippet so he can freely walk around.

Farrier is coming Friday to dig it out if it hasn't burst.

Not sure the salt water will help if its not got a drain hole. Salt toughens things up and you need a soft spot for it to burst through. Im surprised he didnt say just water.

You could try Blackdraw from Equine America, the people who make Cortaflex.

He said the salt would work along the same lines as sugar/soap mix. It will tighten it up and so draw the problem out of the foot....make sense?
