my horse has got an abcess atm...its nice and clean and vet has said after a couple of days that i can go onto dry poulticing...however, the hole seems very large- how do i make sure that it doesn't get infected againas presumably will take a while to heal properly...

Once all the infection has cleared up it might be worth padding the hole with cotton wool to stop the hole filling with dirt or stones when the horse gets turned out. Obviously this should be picked out daily and kept clean otherwise you're creating more problems. The hole will probably grow out quicker than you think, assuming it's on the sole of the hoof, and not REALLY deep?

thanks! just spoke to farrier who suggested packing with iodine soaked cotton wool and then vetwrap/duck tape to go out in field and then to soak in epsom salts when get back from riding to make sure its keeping clean :)
