been wondering if my horse has had an abcess as he hasnt been going right recently. Today i found that the top layer of his hoof had come away in one place about the size of a 1p coin. wasnt in pain with it, and didnt appear to be any stuff coming out of it. Any idea if this could have been an abcess or something else (he has been stabled all this week, so no damage from the field)

Hi there
Your poor horsey... do you mean the top layer of his sole had come off, or an area of the hoof wall?

I have known an abscess take weeks to come out, a horse not going right for some time before it finally showed itself (or at least, thats what we assumed was wrong when the abcess appeared).

Are there any digital pulses? Is he responding to hoof testers/hoof pick in any particular point of the hoof?

I am not an expert by any means but an old brood mare of mine suffered terribly with abscesses before being PTS. During that time, she never had a piece of her hoof come away??!!
The abscess would either come out through her sole or track up to the coronet.

Has your horse damaged it's hoof by standing on it (maybe with a stud in)? It normally can take a while for an abscess to get to the point of causing pain but once it is realised, once opened up, the pressure is released immediately.

small area of hoof wall. He doesnt seem sore in any point of his hoof, but will have a really close inspection tommorow.

He doesnt have studs in, so that wasnt the cause of the missing hoof!

Just hoping its not an abcess waiting to come out
