Abcsess revovert treatment Help!

My horse has a abcsess. On Saturday I could see a exit wound on her heel bulb. Vet came on monday, she is on bute and 5 days antibiotics. The farrier came later on monday as they were due a trim any way. He found the abcsess in her hoof and pared a hole in the sole. I have poulticed every day since last friday. The vets said put her out, the farrier said keep her in?
So would it be ok to turn out in the morning with dressing and poultice removed then bring in pm and soak in hot water and epsom salts. Then put a poultice on for the night and leave in. Then do the same again the following morning?

Keep the poultice on - pad the whole foot using a disposable nappy and wrap well with vet wrap - I don't have stabling so can only treat my mare when she has an abscess out in her paddock - the above works well

or you could use this cheap effective poultice

Thank you. I must do a bad job of puttung it on she wears straight throught it wether in or out. Iv used animalitex then gamgee then nappy then vet wrap then duct tape with a feed bag over the lot but it goes through. How long do you keep poulticing for? How long would it be before they can go out without a dressing?
 
If the abscess had already found an exit through the heel why did the farrier dig a hole in the sole? It will just make healing take longer. I'd turn on a dry field asap. Movement will help clear any remaining gunk clear out from the foot.
 
Im not sure why the farrier made hole. Maybe because the other was in the heel bulb and its easier for it to drain down rather than up? The vet face her bute and antibiotics as her leg was swollen and hot. The farrier said she didnt really need them as this often happens with a abcsess but I suppose you put trust in your vet and thet said she could have lyphangitus.
So can I turn her out without dressing tben soak and put a poultice on when she is in at night or is it best to keep constantly covered? With her going through the dressing at tye skle of her hoof I feel like I am keeping dirt in rather than out if you know what I mean? Iv tried very strong duct tape and a feed bag but it still wares through at the sole.
 
Get some gorilla duct tape!!!! My appy where's through the silver duct tape on one night of box walking so I put the gorilla duct tape on the bottom over the silver duct tape and just slightly over the edge of the hoof and I can get a few days wear out of it!!!! ( I do change poultice every day just reuse the gorilla tape)

Does she still have a shoe on the abscessed foot? If you are able to poultice without the shoe for a while then you'll find that the tape will work well
 
No she dosnt have shoes on. I have rhino tape it is very tough but will look out for gorilla tape. I have bought a vet sock, seemed like the effect solution but ended up letting moisture in. Though it did stay on.

I tub the foot with a handfull of Epsom Salts in warm water,then poultice the foot. I cover the poultice with a nappy ( A newborn one, the tabs hold I on) then vet wrap and finally duck tape. I then put the boot on and turn the horse out. Movement helps the abscess to come out.

I use Bute at a minimum as I want to see the horse move. Antibiotics don't work with an abscess they only mask the symptoms. Another think I use is Hydrogen Peroxide. I syringe this into the hole It will help to clear any pus that is there.
 
Thank you I will get some hydrogen peroxide tomorrow. Can yo just get it from the chemist?
How long should I keep poulticing and dressing the hole in her hoof for?
 
When you go to the Chemist Do Not say it is for an animal as they will not sell it to you. Say it is to remove a stain or something.

I get mine from EBay. Well worth having some in your First Aid kit
 
magnesium sulphate paste is great for drawing abcesses & doesn't soften wall/sole like wet poultice,available from chemist.
 
Hydrogen peroxide looks efficient as it bubbles grit and blood out. But I have been told that it kills off live tissue which, within the hoof, is not really what you want.
You would need to keep the hole in the sole covered or packed with cotton wool as a piece of sand/grit moving back up into the foot will cause more problems.
 
Our gp doctor uses it on children with grazes from gravel roads - it gets all the embedded gravel out....if it is ok for our children (who are fascinated and don't complain of pain!) then it's ok for horses in my opinion!!
 
I don't know why but she is wearing through everything I have tried. I am gong to get a shires poultice boot from ebay. They do a rubber one and one called equiboot. Has any one tried either of these? The equiboot one looks to be more useful as you can ride in it like a hoof boot but I'm not sure if it will rub on her hel bulb as this is where there is a exit from the abcsess. The rubber one looks more comfortable for the hel bulb but not designed for riding.

Try the car inner tube - it really works well and is usually free! Go to a place that specialises in replacing tyres for people they usually have a pile of them
