Hi,

The horse I share has just been diagnosed with an abdominal hernia (not strangulated)
I wasn't there when the vet came but he said its a small rupture of the internal abdominal wall and she's on paddock rest for 6 weeks with twice daily bute for 2 weeks before a review.
We don't know how she did it, the lump (which is about the size of a hand over her obliques) was found one morning after being in her stable overnight. She was in work but nothing excessive, the vet said some horse are just more susceptible.
This diagnosis came 2 weeks after the initial call out where the vet wasn't sure so she was put on bute and paddock rest then. In this time the lump came and went and came again. Otherwise she has no problems and is fine in herself, even if you run your hand over the area she's not bothered. She's eating drinking going to the loo and moving fine and doesn't seem to be in discomfort.

Anyway my question is if she's already been resting for 2 weeks and there's been no change to the lump, do hernias heal themselves and is this likely to happen in 6 weeks? I would have thought she may have needed some kind of support (like a belly band) to allow the muscles to heal. If there's no change I imagine she'll need an operation. Have any of you experienced this?

Sorry to waffle, basically do you think she needs a support to help it heal and if she needs an op what should we expect.

I'd appreciate any response as I couldn't grill the vet and the owner didn't either x
