Hi all just looking for similar.... 3 weeks Wednesday pony presented as midly lame come Friday thought he had broken a leg.... turn out nasty abcess in his back foot... a week later it finally came out the coronet band and another week later puss is still coming out at a massive rate having to dry politce and change twice a day... although it's draining pony still on 3 legs and in stable vet gave antibiotics 3 days ago. He now doesn't want to eat hay I've been putting him out for 20 min twice a day and he is sore but think he needs more but I'm so conflicted any advice thank you

The vet said fir the time being to leave him where he was most comfortable I have been putting him out this week for 20 minutes twice A-day but he is literally only putting his toe to the floor I left him out today for 3 hours and he struggled to walk in and then lay down when he did come in I don't know whether I'm doing more harm than good putting him out but I know he needs to be out but im stuck with he stays in and get else's or goes out and gets potentially Laminitis

I'm struggling to understand your last point about laminitis. I think I would keep in the stable if he's struggling as badly as it sounds even though movement can help drive the pus out I can't be doing with watching them really struggle and only go for turnout when they can at least put the foot full on the floor through the stride.

I would be hot tubbing the foot at least twice a day though. Dry poultice in between. And if the abscess bursting hasn't resulted in any change in the lameness I'd probably want an x-ray.

Further investigation/speak to the vet again time here I think.

Vet was concerned he could get stress laminitis he has advised no more wet poltice as already had a few days of that its still draining but would have thought after nearly 4 days he could have put his foot down more.. I will contact vet tomprrow

I've known one drain for 4 weeks but the horse was walking about on it (painfully). I've also known one where the infection tracked up the leg - so I'd x ray in your position just to check there's nothing really nasty there.

I'd want an x ray by now, but I would also be pumping 3% hydrogen peroxide in the hole twice a day because they don't drain properly upwards and ime do better if they are flushed twice a day.

One I had with an abscess that wouldn't clear up turned out to have a bit of wire buried in his frog. Plus pushed it out and once removed it cleared.
Hope he gets better soon.
