abnormal behaviour.

My mare has been turned out with another mare for almost a week now and they have both been in season. since she has been with this mare she has been really difficult to handle and i can't do anything with her. she is worse when taken out of the field as she spins around barges and calls to the other mare. she has never been like this before around mares only geldings if shes in season. i rode her out today n the whole way she was jogging sideways chucking her head around and at one point was trying to canter down the road, which down country lanes is not a good idea!!

Has anyone any ideas about this strange behaviour as I really don't know what to do with her!!?
 
Can you not move her to another field?

Has anything else changed? Fed? amount of exercise? etc etc

Is the grass better in the new field?
 
there is limited grazing where we are so can't really move her.
nothing has changed except being put with this new mare. she has been off work for almost a month due to lameness wich may explain her behaviour out riding, but not the rest of this.
 
When Ty came back into work after a month off he was a lunatic - and bucked me off on a hack. Never done it before or since......
 
alot of mares I know get very attached - especially if they're on their own in the field with one other....can another horse not be introduced?
 
My mare has also started to nap when taken away from her field mate, never been like it before.
Gotta just try and work her through it, i know how annoying it is but i think it is the only way.
 
It could be that your mare, or the other mare is not fully cycling....the hormones are not yet working smoothly as it's early in the year.
The other mare is perhaps sending out male hormones....?
My mare does this with new mares and I reckon it's because, in the wild, a new mare could be accompanied by....new stallions!
She may settle down by the next season...
