When does one become the other? As in at what stage of pregnancy is it an abortion/slipped foetus? And which is first? Thanks

Always have taken it as being "slipped" within the very first stages of conceiving, and "aborting" later on due to an infection or twins which weren 't picked up on a scanner.

Ahh but surely early on, it's absorbing?

[/ QUOTE ] Absorbing - very early, slipped - once you've had the 14 and 21 day scan and seen the heart beat. Stud vet out next week so will ask him the difference between it all because my stud "bibles" don't actually define any of the terms.

Yeah, I'll see our stud vet on Weds. We will have to compare notes

rossdale says (and who are we to argue with HIM?!) that abortion is the expulsion or birth of the foal before the 300th day of pregnancy. Abortions can be described as early or late. Early is usually applied for resorption, foetal death or foetal loss before about day 90. If it's found after about day 40 scan, there is usually no evidence of an abortion so it is possible that there had been an incorrect diagnosis of pregnancy although not always as the foetus and membranes would be so small they could easily be missed.

There's a load more but too much for me to scribble now, you'll have to read the book again!

You don't HAVE a pregnancy - in practical terms - until about 22-25 days when a heartbeat can be detected. And it would be a brave person who bet on a pregnancy remaining a pregnancy until after a 35 day scan. Before that, the only evidence of a mare losing the pregnancy is that it doesn't show up on a scan anymore (although I have one mare who hides her pregnancies from the scanner between 14 day and 28 day scan - we can pick up the placenta and signs of a prednancy, but not the 28 day follicle itself - it's too low.) Obviously you can pick up a follicle at 12-14 days, but the mare can easily come back into season 4-5 days later. The pregnancy isn't absorbed - it just gets flushed out.

'Slipping' a foal is just another term for abortion.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes will do. We've provisionally booked our vet for Weds as well. Be interesting to see what he says.
