I've poulticed for three days now, day one was a wet poultice, black gunk oozing out, I changed to dry the next day and at the time of the change, nice red blood was coming out. Changed to another dry yesterday and noticed that the hole is starting to 'plug' itself, I assume with the dried blood. Now Ben has been getting sounder day on day, and was pretty much sound by yesterday, no tenderness on the turn, so this is all good. However, I'm going up to the yard in a bit, but just wondering what to do about the hole, should I leave it or clear the dried blood (or what I'm assuming is dried blood)?

Wherabouts is the abcess?

I'd be tempted to flush it just to make sure there isn't any debris in there unless it was in a place where it would be very difficult to get mucky.

Abscess burst on the sole, right on the hoof wall. Dianchi, I poulticed following my farriers advice, who saw the abscess and who I trust completely. Moreover, as the blood was coming through red, I can see no reason to continue drawing out the process and wet poulticing, I would have continued if gunk had still been coming out. However, I did really ask about the hole, not how long someone would have hot poulticed.

It was more due to the fact that once you are happy that all is drawn out you can then plug the hole, good old Stockholm tar and cotton wool always works for me.

If its a short poultice period you run the risk of plugging dirt inside

Leaving in About five mins LL be up there in about 15 x. Yes, I could go with wash then plug although my main worry is all the mud on the field.... I'm still going to be booting him up to go out for now to keep it as clean as possible

So far the poultice period has been three days (one wet and two dry) I think I'm going to lean the hole and pop another dry on for tonight, then plug and hopefully turn out for a couple of hours tomorrow

I take it the farrier or vet opened it? (otherwise I'd be a bit worried that there was blood - I have never come across a naturally draining abscess that involved blood!).

If so, and it has been poulticed until the poultice is clean (so nothing more coming out), I would then flush with a syringe containing hydrogen peroxide (you can get it in Boots), then plug. I have used the Stockholm tar style plug, but find the Red Horse Hoof Stuff is what seems to stay in best. You can check it every day, and remove, flush again, and repack every few days.

Hi, yes the farrier came out, he took a thin sliver (probably about as thick as a thick crisp) off the hoof wall area of the sole, and it started to drain. I suspect the fresh blood wasn't helped by the fact that the stupid horse was put in the sandschool with the idea of leaving him there while I mucked out, and galloped up and down and bucked, so I bought him out and tied him up! Then when I removed the poultice there was a bit of blood, so could have been from the impact of behaving like a tit in the school, however, it's far better than black gunk :/ I've put another poultice on tonight and will grab the hP (I have some here at home) and take with me tomorrow, the plan is to turn him out booted up for a couple of hrs in the afternoon, so he can stretch his legs, I will then fully clean and flush with hp then plug up.
