Horse threw a shoe Weds and came in lame. Very hot foot, bounding pulse, I assumed abscess. Farrier couldn't find a thing, vet insisted 100% abscess. Advised to allow it to blow naturally rather than dig around the foot. Now the foot is stone cold, no pulse, seems sound BUT there hasn't been any blow anywhere. If this was a bruise rather than an abscess, could it resolve so quickly? Or is this likely to be an abscess that will reappear soon? I'm supposed to be leaving in 10 days for training in Portugal so don't know what to think. I will be speaking with the vet againt tomorrow. Thanks all.

I had a similar incident with my horse last weekend. She came in from the field incredibly lame so I called the vet. she also had a bounding pulse and hot foot. Vet had a minor dig but nothing came out. He advised abscess or bruise. I hot tubbed in hot water for about four days, and poulticed - nothing came out and horse is sound again! I spoke to the vet on the phone a few days later and he said that it was probably just a bruise from the hard ground...

I also had similar to this recently, horse came down field hopping and not wanting to put much weight on it.Called vet said it was abcess in same place hed had one a few weeks before & i agreed with him.Vet dug as deep as he dared, nothing came out,he suggested we stable him for a few days as he was so lame,oh fetched lorry(horse is wintering out),took him home & he promptly lay down in stable with a big look of relief on his face.Hot tubbed & poulticed, nothing. After 5 days he was walking a lot better so dressed foot realy well & took him back up to his winter field.Kept hoof dressed for another a few days more, still nothing but became completely sound.so it may have just been a bruise.

Mmm - very similar experiences it seems. So, may well have resolved then without necessarily lurking waiting to come out later. Let's hope so. Just can't help but think that if it IS an abscess, then the pus has to go somewhere or else the pain remains. So I reckon maybe it was a superfical bruise, although wouldn't have thought the foot would get so hot with a bruise. He is a wuss though - hence making it look soooo dramatic. Possible?? Thanks guys.
